Im in the process of doing my DCF in Johannesburg, South Africa. I turned in my I130 paperwork, along with the g235(?) form on august 28. The officer told us that the forms would be mailed to DHS in washington and that we should wait 8 weeks for the next step.

My question is whether or not i would receive any paperwork/notifications in those 8 weeks? I dont want to harrass the officer in case that he will have some say later on.

thanks

kirit,

This is a weird thing they told you, and it may or may not be correct--normally the petition wouild be adjudicated there in SA. There was one recent poster who said the overseas office told him the same thing, but it turned out to not be true.

At any rate, there's really nothing for you to do at this point except wait for some contact from the Consular IV Unit. I suspect it will be sooner than 8 weeks, but we don't have any recent South Africa DCF successes.

Can you clarify what type of residency requirement you had to be eligible to file locally?

Hello,

Im a south african citizen who just became a naturalized US citizen at the end of july. When I went to turn in our paper work, I had told the officer that I was only in the US to meet my residency requirements to achieve my naturalization. This seemed to satisfy him, as he didnt ask for any further proof of south african residency.

Im actually leaving today to the US to take care of some financial work, and was wondering if it would be worth contacting my senator to check u p on this case.

Thanks for any info.

Congratulations on your new passport! :) (we got done this July too)

I don't think that there's anything in it to contact your Senator. I see that the Consulate has contact info here: email is usually a good way to ask them your questions

http://pretoria.usembassy.gov/wwwhvisas_iv1.html

I'd just drop them a line and ask them to clarify the overall timeline. Athens, for example, just kept giving me the total processing time, and they stuck pretty close to it.

The Consulate is your friend. :)

Update:

Yesterday my wife got a phone call from the US embassy in joburg, they wanted to immediatly conduct a phone interview with my wife and myself. My wife got nervous because i wasnt in the country and told the lady that i was in fact in the country but not there with her. The lady on the phone told her to call back once we were both together.

A few minutes later, she called me in the US and told me what had happened. I told dont get nervous and call her back. Tell her that you were caught off guard/nervous and that in fact I was in the US. My wife called this lady back and told her that. She was upset about the lying and told her to not do it again. Anyways, she conducted the phone interview with my wife than and there. She told my wife to tell me to get back to South Africa as soon as possible.

Im actually leaving to go back and live with my wife back in south africa on the 10th. I thought i could knock 2 birds with one stone, and it might have bit me in the ###. I thought i could get my tax returns for 2005 for the i864(?) form, and look at aquiring a business in a few months, while i was waiting for my 8 weeks to finish. Hopefully the interviewer doesnt hold that against me.
