Take your passport with your k1 entry stamp, if you are in your 90 days to SSS and get card. If past 90 apply for AOS get your I797 and get SSS. See SSS site for more particulars in case I missed something. (simplified version of SS application).

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

It's just easy to get a Social Security card. Go down to your local Social Security office and fill out the application. Take your passport with you. They will send your card in a week or so.

we did this as well as 3 other couples and they told us we had to wait until they get their green cards this was done before the 90 days wife got her green card on the 2 and went and they told her it would take 4 weeks

You should have talked to a supervisor at the Social Security office. Also, I believe they won't issue a SSN if you are in the final two weeks of your I-94.

On the Guide, there is a letter you can print off the details that you are able to get your SSN, even without your GC. (We didn't need it though, but came armed with everything.)

You should've applied for your SSN before you got married. A K-1 visa holder is eligible to get an SSN, but as soon as you get married, you're no longer a K-1 visa holder. Hence, the Social Security Office tells you you have to wait until you get your green card. You do not need an SSN when filing your adjustment of status.

K-1 YES My wife got hers 16 hours after she arrived. It DOES NOT authorize work.

Go to the SS office, apply for the card in your MAIDEN NAME exactly as it is in your passport and visa. If you change your name after marriage, go back when you have your GREEN CARD in your hand and change the name with SS.

DO NOT Leave the social security office until you have a receipt for your application, DO NOT accept any excuses from untrained clerks, as for a supervisor if needed.

You can go back the NEXT MORNING and get your number, the card will come in about a week, but you can get the number the next morning. Alla arrived on a Wednesday and we had her SS number in our hand Friday morning and added her to our bank accounts and finalized the papers on her student grant on Friday less than 48 hours after she arrived. She began her MA degree program on the following Monday with a 50% grant.

VERMONT! I Reject Your Reality...and Substitute My Own!
