As of two days ago I crossed the border and am home! I can't get over how weird it feels! My mind keeps playing over and over (in different variations), "WOW, I LIVE here now". After two years of visiting my husband, I was quite used to being a guest! I have already unpacked most of my belongings (didn't have much). Now I'm sitting here in a bit of a daze and thought I would hop on here and ask other people who have recently moved to the US how they are feeling? I think I will miss Canada quite a lot, however I will be going back a lot to visit family so hopefully that will prevent any serious home sickness from coming up! Most importantly, I am now residing with my most amazing husband! I thought this day would never come and cannot believe it finally has!

I am so happy for you and that you are HOME. I can't wait to POE in 3 days and finally be settled in to a routine and life with my soon to be husband. We all paid our dues and waiting for this moment and it will be awesome to experience it soon!!!

Good Luck and WELCOME HOME :)

First of all, congrats on your POE! Isn't it amazing that the process is over? (Well, besides AOS & ROC of course...)

I POE on Friday and it feels quite weird. Like you, I never thought this day would come. Best of luck to you and your hubby!

I'm making my POE on the same day as you- can I ask where? I'm going to Toronto Pearson airport :)

My POE is going to be by land in International Falls, MN. I just read a thread and I am nervous because someone said that not all US border POE do K1 visa entries. What does that mean? I thought that any border I can cross and activate my visa...I will have to do more resarch on this.

Good Luck to you and I hope all goes smooth and safe for you on Friday!!!!

Perhaps you should call the border crossing and ask? I think some people have done that before when they were unsure and it was helpful.

Thanks for the wishes :) Good luck to you as well!

It will be 2 years this December that I've lived here in the US.

I am comfortable here & living here is definitely "normal" now.

..but whenever I refer to Canada I still call it "home" (ie back home). My family/friends refer to it as that too, when they ask "When are you coming home"?

Its not that I don't think here is home, it is....but different.

Its confusing!!

I POE'd on Aug 26th. It's a bit different for me since my husband has been living with me in Canada for the past 4 years and we've just come this way to visit his parents. Now we are temporarily living with his parents and I don't know what to do with myself, LOL I am happy to be here but it's just weird being out of my element, let alone, living with others. We get along but still weird. The crappy thing is, my husband had to leave this morning to go back to work in Western NY until a position opens up in Illinois. We have no idea how long this will be :bonk: I just got my SSN, which was MUCH faster than I thought, so at least I can go get my drivers license, start working on getting my hairstyling license so then I can start looking for work!

Started LDR with hubby July '04, married Nov '06

He moved and became permanent resident of Canada Nov '07

Now, we want to move back to his hometown in Illinois!

Filed DCF for IR1 Visa

I-130 sent to Toronto Embassy: September 12, 2010

Initial approval at Toronto Embassy: November 19, 2010

Packet 3 rec'd January 28, 2011

Packet 4 rec'd March 21, 2011

Medical May 16, 2011

Interview July 12, 2011 - Approved!

Visa/Passport picked up DHL July 22, 2011

POE date August 26, 2011

That's so true! I was talking to a friend about that today. She moved to Korea and does the same thing. I think I will always refer to Canada as "home"

I've lived in the US for 2 years and 3 months and I very rarely experienced any kind of homesickness until recently. I'm not sure why I feel it now.

Congrats on a successful move Kammo! :)

Welcome home. I am quite comfort since i finally with the one that i love. Sometimes i miss my family. You are lucky, at least it is easier for you to back to Canada. Cheaper, easier, shorter. The thing that i dont like here, is seems people here mostly living in high standar life and up, not like me, am simple person, i am used to simple thing, i feel overwhelmed and sometimes sad how people here not finish their food, buy everything in dozen while we only needs little, credit card seems something common, i used to buy everything cash, so no debt. I am still adjusting myself to the lifestyle here.

Hi guys :)

I went through the Blaine POE (aka Peace Arch). I will write a review for it as soon as I can! As far as know the SSN just comes in the mail as well as green card. I think all the major paper work is done for now! :)

Thanks for the replies and "welcome home"'s!

-Kristy

When you go thru the POE, what is the process? and when do you apply for the SSN? right after you get married? what you need with you? thanks and congrats to all :)

You should really check out the guides. They are stickied at the top of the forum and they go through every step of the process in detail. You can also read reviews of POE which will give you an idea of what the process is like.

Remember that no one cares about your visa more than you do- it's good to ask others for information, but it's also important to do on your research since you don't know what false information others may give you by accident. It can take awhile to do all the necessary research but you are immigrating, after all, and it requires some work :) VJ is a treasure trove of useful information, if you just look for it.

Edit: I'm pretty sure that receiving your SSN is different for CR1/IR1 visas and K1 visas. I -think- K1s have to actually apply for it whereas it sort of comes automatically in the mail for CR1/IR1s. This is an example of why it's important to do your own research- although we try to be helpful, no one is an expert on every nitty gritty part of the process. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm super busy right now and haven't done thorough research on the process beyond POE. :P You have to particularly watch out for the differences in CR/IR1s and K1s.
