My daughter and I landed on Aug 31st 2011. We both went to Social Security Office in Neptune, NJ to request SSN. We had all required documents:

1- Passport with I-551 for both of us.

2- Birth certificates.

3- Bank statement showing that we have an address in NJ.

The lady told us that we cannot apply for SSN and we have to wait for a month or get I-94 form, bla, blahh, blaahh, #######.

P.S: In form DS-230, we declined the request to get SSN :(

My question:

1- Is it possible to apply in another Social Security Office in Virginia (when we visit some family)?

2- Will it help if we get an appointment to talk to an immigration officer in Washington, DC or Newark, NJ?

Thanks for your reply. Please, be advised that we are traveling to Canada in less than a week. We need SSN so we can start applying for jobs in USA and settle here.

Thanks

Immigration cannot help you with an SSN they have nothing to do with social security.

We went to the local SS office after my wife received her 10 year green card (24 days after POE). We filled out the form while waiting for our number to be called. When our number was called we presented the form, her green card, birth certificate and passport. They checked their computer first to see whether or not she was in the system. Total time in and out the building was about 30 minutes. 7 days later she received her SS card in the mail from Baltimore, MD.

I think you are going to find that most office are not going to do anything until you have been here three weeks.

Why in the world didn't you check off on the DS-230? I suggest that everyone check off on the DS-230. If it doesn't work, you are no worse off. After three weeks you go apply at the SSA office.
