Calling all Atlanta Area VJers!

Those of us who live in and around the Atlanta area have met several times in the past few years. Two years ago we met near Helen, GA for lunch at a State Park. Last year we met at Noah's Ark in Locust Grove, south of Atlanta, so we decided this year we should meet somewhere in Atlanta itself.

Finding a good venue has been a challenge but I think this will be a perfect opportunity to those of us who are interested (and available) to meet in a fun, family oriented location where most of the set up is already in place- we just have to show up!

I am proposing that we have our next get together on Sunday, October 2 anytime from 12 to 6 pm at the annual 'Day in the Park' event at the Historic Oakland Cemetery! yep - that's right - a cemetery! LOL - this is actually one of the premier family gatherings in the city and is attended by thousands of people each year. There are lots of booths and crafts people and musicians and restaurants set up throughout the park. There is entertainment with live music and a Victorian Costume contest (I actually won Most Historic Costume last year ) and a lot of people just show up in historic costumes of one sort or another anyway. There is great food options - Six Feet Under, the restaurant across the road has these wonderful concoctions called 'Rat's Toes' - they are jumbo shrimp wrapped in bacon and broiled - and OH, are they good! - or you could bring your own. The cemetery itself is a beautiful, wooded area with lots of lovely statues and sculpures and architectural features,all beautifully landscaped. It is truly a happy, and friendly event and admission is by donation - recommendation is $5 I believe.

My husband and I are going to be there regardless - I'm going to enter the Costume contest again although I don't expect to do as well as last year but because it is fun. I'll bring the VisaJourney sign and try to get one of the picnic tables near the entertainment. It would be a good idea for people to bring their own chairs or blankets as well as it is more of a picnic style approach than anything else.

So, everyone is welcome and I hope to see as many of you as can make it there. Even if it turns out you don't like the other VJer's () you will still have lots of fun on your own.

Can't make it I have to work that day. I work every second weekend so I guess it was a 50/50 chance. What about also making some kind of Canada Day plans with everyone? There are a lot of nice spots up here

Joel, I am sorry you won't be able to join us - drat that having to work for a living, eh? but Maybe Karen and Anna can come if they are available? It would be great to see them again!

That's great! It's really close for you and easy to get to even if you don't want to drive. I'm looking forward to meeting those who are coming - it will be a great opportunity to get together and have some good 'old fashioned' fun in a great venue. It doesn't get much better than this!'

We actually do have a specific time and place - we are meeting Sunday October 2 at the annual 'Day in the Park' at Oakland Cemetery. I will have a table with a big 'Visa Journey" sign on it in front of the entertainment 'stage' area at Oakland Cemetery from 12 noon on. People are welcome to come for the whole event or part of the event, but we will be there for the whole event.

It would be great if you and your wife are able to join us. I'll look forward to meeting you.

LOL! Well, that explains the user name ! I wondered if you were a fan when I saw it .

While the costume contest is for Victorian impressions (and yes, I appreciate that the crew of the Enterprise did 'return' at least once to the Victorian era ) there are always a number of people who don't come to participate in the contest and just like to come in costume of one sort or another - some of them are pretty interesting as well - so yeah, if you wanted to wear one of your Star Trek uniforms, it would be perfectly fine - especially if you play along if people mention anything ("wait, you can see me?! Where's the nearest clothesline!")

Two years ago there was a Zombie fest taking place in another part of the City and they decided to 'advertise' their event by a walk around Oakland Cemetery - there were literally thousands (ok,maybe just a few hundred) zombies in all shapes and sizes and degrees of decay who invaded the cemetery for about an hour - it was wonderful and totally bizarre - but that is what happens at "The Day in the Park." It is just a pure 'fun' time. (Although I didn't hang around to see what happened to those the 'zombies' touched, hehe).
