I get Paul's post. I understand how it comes across as odd. All he's saying is that the government uses social issues to distract the people from underlying structural imbalances.

I think if the majority of American's realized the country was controlled by a very narrow oligarchy, you might start to see flash riots and civil unrest. American's are under the notion that we live in a republic where they have choice in the direction of the country. But when all candidates are generally following the same set of instructions with only minor differences the voting masses lose control. Matt Groening created a good satire of this situation with Kang and Kodos when they snatched the bodies of US politicians.

Indeed the gentleman in the OP article is likely a mouth piece of the oligarchy.

It comes across as odd because Paul loves to inject hyperbole into it. Hence no matter how much truth there is to it (there is some, if you routinely watch the evening network news for example) it's completely bizarre to apply that view to iconic moments in US History like Women's Suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement and suggest that these things were (not are) bullsh!t. It diminishes the fact that these very real events for a lot of people - more than that it diminishes the issues behind the events.

Think of the historic/controversial events that surrounded those issues.

There are a lot of "new poor" and "working poor" these days. Some due to the fact their jobs got shipped over sea's. This country isn't in the economic fix it's in right now due to the poor, it's in this fix due to the so called rich sucking it dry with government bail outs, and wars for oil.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I really think you need to a bit better than that.

Women's suffrage:

World War I.

What better way to get society to shut up about the fact that they didn't want to go into this war to begin with than making it the war that was about 'democracy.' Who didn't have a democratic vote though? Who was it that had been pushing a huge movement especially starting in 1913? Women. What better way to shut people up than to give them a little something to keep their mouths shut on the war.

New Deal items/Social Security:

Let's be honest, for every person for it, there were the same against it. Keep everyone arguing about 'social issues' while we the government go over here to the Bretton Woods conference and create a world economy. The US economy will soon become irrelevant, but we have given you something to bicker about and something to shut everyone else up. You won't take notice at all.

Civil Rights Act:

Help people get over JFK and the controversy of his assassination, as well as setup and get by with fabricating an incident for further US involvement in the Vietnam Conflict. People at home were bickering and arguing over "black and white issues" and seemed to forget everything else going on around them until a few years later when it was too late.

That's not what I said - people can be "poor" but economically independent. Economically independent does not equal "rich"

Wait a minute, lets reread what you wrote.

Economic independence makes dignity possible

so without economic independence, it is not even possible to have dignity?

All this word-play aside, I still suggest women, are not at a higher plane of dignity in this current culture than they were even when I was a kid.

Of course to debate that.... one must do what we have to.... to make sense of it and that is- Redefine what the word "dignity" even means.

dignity |ˈdignitē|

noun ( pl. -ties)

the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect : a man of dignity and unbending principle | the dignity of labor.

• a composed or serious manner or style : he bowed with great dignity.

• a sense of pride in oneself; self-respect : it was beneath his dignity to shout.

• a high or honorable rank or position : he promised dignities to the nobles in return for his rival's murder.
