hello vj member's who already encountered same case of mine? i just arrived last week with k1 visa entry and my question was what should i do first get married or file my sss#? anyone could help me here much appreciated! tnx very mch..

Your choice, one has nothing to do with the other.

My wife got her SS number 16 hours after arriving. Apply for it in your MAIDEN name (reagrdless of if you are married or not) and use your passport and visa/I-94 as ID. If you get a clerk that does not know their job, DO NOT leave until you have a receipt for your SS number. Ask for a supervisor. As a K-1 you ARE entitled to one. You are eligible for the SS from day ONE until day 76 (14 days before your I-94 expires) If that time has passed you must wait until you have a green card or EAD

AFTER you have your green card, IF you change your name, go back to the SS office with your green card and change your name on the SS card. This is not a critical matter, you can change your name with SS whenever you want or never, makes no difference.

Do both, they are mutually exclusive from each other, so it doesn't matter which comes first or last.

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!
