This week, as the Federal Emergency Management Agency was coordinating the national relief effort in Hurricane Irene's wake, Texas congressman and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul was calling for the agency's elimination. In an interview with host Scott Simon, Paul explains his position and responds to criticism of his "fringe" presidential candidacy.

I don't consider myself a Ron Paul supporter but I do have to question the reporters bias when he calls Paul a "fringe" candidate.

Paul has unbelievable support... for a guy who is not even a republican, running on the republican team.

Do you believe FEMA is cost effective?

Of course Ron Paul is right. FEMA is a joke, it always has been a big joke. The problem is the people who spend too much time relying on the Feds to rebuild their lives, rather than doing things on their own.

Talk to the people in Galveston in the early 1900's about FEMA. They'll laugh in your face. They didn't need the FEDS to rebuild, to clean up, etc.

We have insurance companies. Why do we need FEMA?

FEMA was a Federal agency that did have a need when it was started. It used to be that after a serious catastrophe states and organizations started to ship help in many forms to the area in question and FEMA was a clearing house and go between to the state and area in question as a focal point to where the need was greatest and areas to pour in the aid and coordinate the aid. Since of course the agency has expanded to pretty much be tasked to take over all relief effort and become like a police state. Roll back FEMA and they are needed still.
