quick question:

can someone explain what the visitors visa process is like?

my wife will be having a baby in december january and i was wondering what are the chances of her mom being able to come here to help with the baby as we will have a newborn and a 2 year old and the help would be great.

what visa should she go for im guessing the visitors visa. how long does the process take, right now she is getting her passport together, we are hoping it can be done soon so she can come see the baby be born.

i was reading that you can expidite it for medical reasons would pregnancy count?

thanks in advance.

Chances arent too good for her to get a tourist visa, but there are people that have gotten them approved. Some got denied the first time and approved the second. All she can do is apply and see what happens. She just needs to show strong ties to the PI. As far as expediting it...pregnancy is not a valid reason. If it were everyone would be getting their wive/girlfriend pregnant.

I would have her apply as soon as she has all everything together. Check out the US Embassy's site about the applying for the visa here: http://manila.usembassy.gov/wwwhniv1.html

Good luck!

I noticed that parents and other immediate relatives of greencard holders/USC have higher chances of getting approved for Tourist Visa because they are the ones who can be petitioned to live in the US and still, they still chose to be tourists.

Right now I think USEM is being good at approving tourist visas. Even before I got my K1 approved, I applied both of my parents for B1/B2 (tourist) visas on Aug 8th online and they were interviewed on Aug 24th. The earliest available slot was Aug 18th which says that there are less applicants at this time for tourist visas. They were only asked a couple of questions including the purpose of the trip, where they are staying and what their previous jobs were (they have been retired for 5+ yrs). No document was asked other than passport and they were approved and both given 10 yr multiple entries visas. My petitioner and I were very happy as we could plan for them to make it to our wedding in November.

In addition to my parents, a friend's mom also got approved in August and one of my single lady friend (which reportedly in the past they said it's difficult to get approved if you're a single female) but she got a tourist visa in July. USEM also has recently called all previous tourist visa holders whose visas have expired in the past year that they can apply for a renewal without an interview and be approved if they have had good record in the past. These events make me believe that US is encouraging tourism and are more lenient than normal during this time. I think applying for a passport now is longer than getting a US tourist visa.

When interviewed, advise your mom in law not to tell that she will be helping with the baby. Normally it is construed as work (yes even if it is her grandchild most esp if you or your wife will be paying for her airfare). Tell her to just say that she has a new grandchild that she'd like to see as well as visit the US. As soon as she makes it to the US, the I-94 is normally good for 6 months but you can extend it for another 6 months while here and that would make a full year. My friend is currently in that situation with her mom here and that's what she has done.

Good luck!

Parents who have no professional careers or unemployed in the past have better chances than those who have. If they have then they should be prepared to show compelling reasons to return home. I would like to add that there is a tricky question in the application. Who will spend for your trip? If the parents have careers then the answer would be , them the parents.
