If you have a CostPlus World Market near you, they sell Malteasers and Flakes, and I think Crunchies too! And they'll be a little cheaper than most British stores. :)

Now, next we need to get shops to start stocking Wispas and Jaffa Cakes...

I was scared to pay with cash for months upon first arriving in the US, because I nearly always forgot about adding tax.

Thanks for the info, I know where a CPWM is! One thing my fiance can't get enough of here is FREE REFILLS on sodas. She says England will never do that!

Do you have an Aldi store near you? They sell their own brand of jaffa cakes that are as good as if not better than McVities! They're a German chain so all their chocolate is delicious.....thats where I get mine from between trips to my nearest World Market. :star:

Better than McVities?! Blasphemy! :o

Hehe. I'd be willing to give them a try! Unfortunately it doesn't look as if there are any Aldi stores within a couple of hundred miles of me!

(It's probably a good thing for my waistline that so many delicious British desserts and chocolates aren't available in the US).

I feel the same...I went from a true choc-a-holic to rarely eating any these days! And cake....the selection here is abysmal.....apart from the cheesecake....thats the best here!

I'm not qualified to answer your question- I'm only making my big move to the US in the next month or two. I've visited the US several times though and generally agree with all the usual comparisons from what I've seen so far.

I am seriously giving up and heading back home to the Highlands of Scotland.

That is our long term plan. I met my wife in Scotland. She has visited many many times (of her own accord...long before meetig me) and loves it there. Other circumstances mean it's best if I move to the US to begin with.....maybe for 10 years....maybe less, maybe more, but one day we'll be back in the Scottish Highlands for sure, their call is too strong.....when I'm in the US, I'm quite sure I'll be wishing I was back in Scotland sometimes....

Good luck with that. It's harder than you think. Not being understood gets frustrating at times, especially on the phone. If I didnt need to be on the phone and be understood all day in my job then I would still have a more pronounced english accent than i do. Some things won't change though, tomato, banana for example. I caused some confusion in Subway the other day as I asked for tomato in my sub, she reached for the Mayo so I repeated that i would like tomato not mayo. So she reached for the jalepinos. I ended up describing a tomato to the poor girl.

I struck lucky then :P Naw i knew it would pose a problem and i took some strategic moves to counteract it.

Currently being background checked for a job that actually embraces my Geordie.

The employers would actually be shaking my hand if my Geordie rubs off. You see im going to be starting work for a young bairn who is non verbal. Parents dont care what she says on the day she speaks. Even if it is "Aye" =)

I have noticed that a few things i say tend to raise a few laughs.... Like "Happy as Larry" ..."Bobs ya Uncle"..."Taking the mickey" even the word "besotted" I just take it all in my stride.

I like to spin the tables at times and do my very best Forrest Gump impression haha

I experienced my idealized version of the UK... but it was only because I was on holiday there! I've been trying to remember really hard how I felt when I actually *lived* there. ;)

Fantastic photos, Scott! Aah, it's been years since I was last in Scotland.

I've been here just over 3 years and I miss England. The lifestyle here is just so alien to me

and the potential of violence is a bit frightening, although I do live in a nice area.

If I had the choice over, I'd wish for us to build a life in my home country. America takes a lot

of getting use to. I can't wait to visit home..I just can't wait.

p.s. i'm looking at some of the vacation days you folks say you have, and how much you're paying for medical bills...and i'm wondering exactly where you work? I have 4 weeks off every year, not including sick and work/family time, my benefits are simply...the bomb. I'm just not feeling that crunch, really.

I'm sorry guys!

Haha, rub it in, why don't you! :P;)

I work for a small company - that's part of the problem. If I go on holiday, there's no one to really take over my duties. For my maternity leave, my boss's sister is going to have to fill in. I'm a little afraid of how the big boss is going to view it! (My immediate boss is cool with it, but her superiors are old-fashioned men who are still dubious of women in the workforce).

Medical benefits for small businesses are also never as good, as it's a much greater cost to the companies to insure their employees.

Didn't the guy in the UK who runs the medical system die while waiting for medical help? I just signed up my spouse and kids through my work insurance. It's a little over a grand a month. :crying: But then again we do not pay 20% sales tax and $11/gal gas, so we are still better off.
