I know the question has been asked before but Elena has her interview on the 15th of September at the Embassy in Moscow and is wondering if prior to leaving Russia she will need a permission letter from the father of her 15 year old son who will accompany her to the US on a K2 visa? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I guess it depends on Russian laws, if she is allowed to take her son out of the country without father's permission. I don't think it's necessary.

p.e Here in Peru you need both parents permission notarized, it doesn't matter is a minor is travelling with one of his parents, still both notarized permission is needed... silly huh?

I was reading on that earlier this week.

(Olya had to get a similar letter, of "no father").

the RUB veterans are best for Russia specific forums.

this thread from the RUB forum discusses it:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/306084-parent-permission-to-leave-russia-on-k1/page__p__4632937__hl__letter+father+__fromsearch__1#entry4632937

some there say the letter isn't required. but i think most would recommend you get the letter if possible.

(plus, it also could matter for boarding flights in the future.)

Yes, you should ask a Mod to move this thread to the RUB regional forum where you have folks who know the real answers.

But the folks who have THE ANSWER are the folks at the Embassy. Email them. Be professional. They will be also and will respond with what they will want to see. Don't be afraid to contact them. They are nice folks.

Hello all and thanks again for your input. As a follow up to my original post and question, I did email the Embassy and they replied a few days later and said that unless the parent/former spouse of the applicant fiance has formally released (legally and you must have the documents to prove it) any custodial rights to the K2 child, the Permission Letter signed and notarized IS required from the former spouse of the applicant/fiance. (Birth parent of the K2 applicant)Hope this helps those who in the future may be faced with the same question. David

Thank you all for your input. We will proceed to get the permission letter and also sedn an email to the Embassy. Always appreciate the help!!

This is VERY country specific, and the consulate is the best source as Baron points out. The best place here is the RUB forum but I do not know how many people brought children who's biological father is listed on the birth certificate and THAT is a crucial element.
