United Nations Prioritizes Renewable Energy

The United Nations has put renewable energy at the top of its agenda in 2012. “We can create jobs that will stimulate economies and provide universal access to all the people,” said the UN’s Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. “That is why the General Assembly has declared next year as the International Year for Sustainable Energy for All”.

He added that providing renewable energy to the 1.4 billion people living without electricity is a priority of the United Nations.

The announcement was made earlier this week during a meeting with National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) researchers.

He emphasized that alternative energy can create jobs, address climate change, empower women and create food security.

The UN hopes that by 2030 every village in the world will have electricity. It wants renewable energy capacity to double by that same year.
