You want to see real "confederate" attitudes as you like to call it. Move to anywhere in "Yankeeville" and you'll see segregation is still alive and well.

Of course my backwoods hillbilly state here has the most wind power in the country, a booming economy, no state income tax, great housing prices, low cost of living, mixed racial neighborhoods, plenty of private and public sector unions despite being an 'at will' employment state, awesome weather etc.... The weird thing is they don't know they are doing it. Once of the nicest guys I worked with was driving me when some Tamla Motown came on the radio and I said "I really like Tamla Motown stuff - how about you "

But your overall question is a good one... except we can no more live in the Confederacy than we can in a Colony

Speaking ofthe South..... that area of the country, I have chosen to live here and I can tell you, I am not alone, in fact I would wager half the people around me are from Ohio, NY, NJ, and so many other places.

The population growth here in the last 2 decades is unreal.... so evidently a lot of people find the work, business, and quality of life they are looking for.

Now as I said I have lived here for quite a while now and the only racial jokes or comments I have heard have come from Northerners with the exception of one local family I know, but to be honest these incidents are perhaps years apart in time.... maybe I just hang out with a better quality of people than Red Does because he always seems to run into these type folks.

Let me ask you Red, if these -right out of hollywood- type rednecks were so offensive why is it Blacks can't see it?

Even though he'd grown up in New York, the lure of the city began to wane for Shelton Haynes as the hectic pace and cost began to take its toll.

The 33-year-old housing manager, who is married with two children, then began to consider places in the South. The family eventually decided on settling in Atlanta, Georgia, where his brother, sister-in-law and parents now also live.

His decision reflects a trend for American blacks to reverse the Great Migration, the 60-year escape from segregation and racism that drove them northwards.

'We have a great support network of family and friends here, and there is good community involvement, with our kids involved in swimming, tennis and basketball,' said Mr Haynes. 'In Atlanta, I also see a lot of African-Americans do very well in a variety of professions, so it was good to see things changing.'

Better jobs and quality of life in the South are beckoning, as is the lure of something more intangible - a sense of home.

Blacks now look to states like Georgia, Texas and North Carolina as the places with the most promise in the 21st century - a prospect that would have been unimaginable a generation ago'

Historically, the South was home to roughly 90 percent of the nation's blacks from 1790 until 1910, when African-Americans began to migrate northward to escape racism and seek jobs in industrial centers such as Detroit, New York and Chicago during World War I.

After the decades-long Great Migration, the share of blacks in the South hit a low of about 53 per cent in the 1970s, before civil rights legislation and the passage of time began to improve the social climate in the region.

The current 57 per cent share of blacks living in the South is the highest level since 1960.

The latest estimates show that the Atlanta metropolitan area increased by more than half a million blacks over the last decade to about 1.7million, making it the metro area with the second-largest black population.

'It's no coincidence that the shift is happening as we encounter economic turmoil that is being felt disproportionately among blacks, such as mortgage foreclosures, loss of jobs and economic devastation in major Northern hubs,' said Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP's Washington bureau.

'With major changes and less racial devastation in the South, people are finding their way back.'

The nation's black population grew by roughly 1.7million over the last decade. About 75 per cent of that growth occurred in the South - primarily metropolitan areas such as Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Charlotte, N.C. That's up from 65 per cent in the 1990s, according to the latest census estimates.

The gains came primarily at the expense of Northern metro areas such as New York and Chicago, which posted their first declines in black population since at least 1980.

Illinois had its first decline in the black population in the state's history, with the number of African-Americans decreasing by 1.3 per cent since 2000, according to official 2010 census figures released yesterday.

The recent census figures for blacks refer to non-Hispanic blacks, which the Census Bureau began calculating separately in 1980.

Despite losing blacks, the New York metro area continued to be home to the largest black population, at roughly 3.2million.
