On thing I wanted to add to this excellent guide/thread and to help out any of my fellow VJ'S in Canada [bEven though the I-129 F petiton paperwork doesn't intially require or mention it,if your finace/fiancee or spouse,is a permanent Canadian resident go ahead and submit a copy of their permanent resident or citizen card/paperwork when you submit the intial application/petiton. This was required of us AFTER receiving the NAO2 / I-129 approval. The letter came from the NVC via the Montreal consulate, requesting a copy of this information before they would process any further, in all it added another 20 days of delay until they "sent out packet 3"[/b]Hope this will help others

good luck

Heads up, this is the new link to the packet 3 instructions on the montreal consulate general website. http://montreal.usconsulate.gov/visas/visas/fianc-k-1-visas/steps/packet-3---instruction-materials-for-fianc-k-1-applicants.html

If for some reason one can't access the URL, here is a quote from the website for posterity:

Packet 3 provides instruction materials for immigrant visa applicants once the case file has been received at the Consulate, but before an interview can be scheduled. If you have received a "Packet 3" letter from the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal, please follow the instructions below to send to the Consulate the required forms and checklist.

NOTE: You are NOT authorized to make an interview appointment at this time. All unauthorized appointments will be cancelled without notice.

If you are a Fiancé (K-1) applicant:

DS-230, Part I only – one copy per each applicant, including children.

DS-156 – 2 copies.

DS-156K (292KB PDF) – 1 copy.

Confirmation receipt regarding Form DS-160 - one copy, available online at ceac.state.gov/genniv.

Checklist of documents to gather for the interview – one copy per family is sufficient.

2 color photographs (Photograph Requirements)

Photocopy of the biographic data page of the applicant's passport.

You may send the documents to the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal using courier services that are offered at no extra cost for the applicant. Please visit the Visa Services website and follow instructions for "IV Applicant Needing to Register for DHL" and "Sending Document to the Consular Section". If you have any further inquiries about the courier services, please visit the U.S. Visa Services website.

Here is also a handy appointment checklist: http://montreal.usconsulate.gov/visas/visas/immigrant-visas/appointment-checklist.html Note that you do NOT need to bring your x-ray with you unless you have tuberculosis.

Appointment Checklist - Immigrant Visas

Appointment Date: ______________

Appointment Time: ______________

Please prepare all the necessary forms and documents before coming to the interview.

Make sure you have the original and a copy of the supporting documents you want to submit during your interview.

To prevent unnecessary delays during your interview, please arrange your documents in the following order:

Valid Passport and photocopy of the biographic page.

Ticket with your number (will be given at the Consulate).

Medical Examination in a sealed envelope (X-ray is not required, unless there is TB).

2 color passport-size pictures (5 cm X 5 cm or 2 inch X 2 inch).

Form DS-230 (175KB PDF), parts I and II, or Confirmation Page of the electronic form DS-260.

Birth Certificate, English translation and a photocopy.

Marriage Certificate, English translation and a photocopy.

Divorce Certificate, English translation and a photocopy.

Custody documents, English translation and photocopy.

Police Certificates from Canada and other countries of previous residence.

Court / Criminal records and photocopy.

Military records and photocopy.

Evidence of Support (I-864, I-864A, I-864EZ, I-864W) and photocopy of IRS transcript or photocopy of the most recent Federal income tax return.

Recent Letter from the U.S. employer (for employment cases).

Copy of the U.S. petitioner status in the USA.

Copies of documents proving petitioner's U.S. domicile.

We take fraud seriously. If it is discovered that you have provided false information or documents, you may be found ineligible for a visa.

Please note that although it is currently not listed on the website, K1s are supposed to submit an I-134 on the day of the interview, not the I-864. CAdreamer e-mailed the Montreal consulate regarding the issue and got the following reply:

I think that Montreal has again (this week) updated the P3 checklist so this point may now be moot, but I did get a response back from them via email, so I thought I should post. I asked whether it was the I-864 or I-134 that was needed for the K1 visa.

---

Me: I have been gathering documentation in preparation for my interview for a K1 visa at the Montreal consulate. Up until 10 days ago, the required Support documentation was listed as the I-134, but now the checklist for the interview (in the Packet 3 documentation) lists the I-864, I-864A, I-864EZ, or I-864W. Could you please confirm that the I-134 is no longer acceptable for the K1 visa process and that the I-864 is what is now required?

Response:

We thank you for your message. Please kindly be informed that the Affidavit of Support applicable to your visa category is the I-134. We hope this information is helpful to you.

Here is a link to another useful thread showing you photographs of the Consulate outside, where to line up and then providing drawings of the Consulate inside so you know where to go, where to stand, where the elevator is, where the windows are for paying fees, handing in paperwork and the interview:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/359761-montreal-consulate-picturesmaps/

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Here is a link to Packet 4, as of December 2011: http://photos.state.gov/libraries/canada/303578/montreal/packet4-montreal.pdf It seems they updated their packet 4 along with the website, although it is quite similar to what I receive in the mail last year. Please note in packet 4 it asks K1 applicants to bring the I-134.

Guys, its getting overwhelming.. I just received my P4 via email and that is what is lists:

The day of your interview

Please bring to your interview the original and one photocopy of each of the following documents (as applicable), for each applicant:

¾ The appointment letter showing the date and time of your interview

¾ Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you plan to enter the United States

¾ Birth certificate

¾ Adoptions decree (s)

¾ Marriage certificate (s)

¾ Death and/or divorce certificate(s)

¾ Police certificates from each country in which the applicant has resided for one year or longer. The certificate(s) must be issued within one year of the date of the visa appointment. NOTE: An applicant must present a police certificate from his/her country of current residence and country of nationality, if residence in such country exceeds 6 months

¾ Court records

¾ Military records

¾ Evidence of domicile in the United States

¾ Job offer letter (for employment-based visas)

¾ Affidavit of support (I-134) (for fiancé, employment and DV visas)

¾ Evidence of support (I-864, Federal individual income tax return for the most recent tax year)

¾ Medical examination

¾ Two photographs (in color)

¾ For K visa applicants, a letter of intent to marry signed by the petitioner within 30 days of interview date

Please ensure you bring all the requested documents. Missing documents will delay processing of your visa application If you have questions regarding the documentation needed or are unable to obtain a required document before the date of your interview, please contact us at Montreal-IV-DV@state.gov or http://canada.usvisa-info.com/.

The U.S. Consulate General is located in downtown Montréal, at 1155 Rue St-Alexandre between Boulevard René Lévesque and Rue Ste-Catherine. Please note that all visitors to the U.S. Consulate General in Montréal are screened by U.S. Consulate security prior to entry. Screening includes inspections via a walk-through metal detector, a hand-held metal detector and an x-ray machine for personal items.

*** Should I bring BOTH forms? 134 and 864? OMG!! Anyone here had interview last week can clarify?

Thanks,

Cam & Ellie

No, ONLY the I-134 for K1s. The checklist is for both spouses and fiances. Spouses bring the 864, fiances the 134. You will complete the 864 when you AOS.

There have been a lot of questions flying around lately about this. Everyone please be reassured that the K1s complete the I-134 for their interview.

Putting the final touches to my massive folder together! and I noticed my Packet 4 instructions list:

  • 2 copies of Form DS-156 completed online and printed with barcode
  • Form DS-156K (do not sign)

but those were sent in with Packet 3 (and it seems I foolishly didn't make copies)

Is this the end of the world? Or is my checklist just "above and beyond"?

This is a great thread and it has helped me immensely. Thanks Ralyse and everyone for the tidbits (and a huge thank you for your time and devotion to help us newbies)

Found out something else today about the interview process.....which can also be read at...http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?app=forums&module=post&section=post&do=reply_post&f=93&t=366569&qpid=5357951........I was trying to book my interview with the CSC and wanted to book in "ready to schedule" as my son is not quite sure he where he wants to complete his post secondary education....here or in the US....hence I don't want to book and pay for the interview in advance as there are no refunds should he cancel his appt....however Inky replied commenting that they've stream lined the interview process in MTL and you can no longer book without paying first.....this is good info to know.

Thought I'd pay it forward to those waiting packet 4.
