I contacted my Congressman who, for no reason other than because I asked nicely and might vote for him someday, submitted an inquiry about our case status yesterday.

I'll keep y'all posted if it works....or if it doesn't.

Well, within 2 days USCIS took fifteen minutes to write me a nice letter to tell me they couldn't take fifteen minutes to look at our petition within 139 days.

Ah well. Another shiny piece of mail addressing me as 'mrs' for the old 'bona fide relationship' pile.

Hi would u mind sharing the format of the letter you sent to your congressman? Thank you...

If you go to your congressman's website, there is usually a link for "request help with a government agency" or something of the kind. Somewhere on that link there should be a "privacy waiver" you'll need to fill out before the congressman can contact USCIS on your behalf. I wrote a cover along the lines of

"Dear Congressman Smith,

I am writing to request your help with a CR-1 visa petition which I filed on behalf of my husband NAME (CONFIRMATION #), on July 1st, 2011 at the California Service Center. Although USCIS claims to process petitions roughly in the order they are received, some petitions as late as September have been approved, while we continue to wait without any indication of progress after ### days. Because of our employment, neither of us will be able to visit the other in the remaining months of the visa process without losing our jobs. I request that you intercede on our behalf to secure a detailed status of our petition. Thank you in advance for this and any other help you can provide.

Sincerely,

NAME"

Didn't work at all though. I think my Congressman wrote/called/whatever asking them nicely to just expedite our petition, which of course we weren't eligible for.

"Dear Congressman Smith...

I sent a similar email, but received no response at all, so I called today. They seemed completely accustomed to hearing from people with immigration requests: I was immediately transfered to someone who deals specifically with immigration issues in my section of the congressional district, and that person suggested that I come speak to her in person and bring my paperwork. I live in a major city with some very entrenched political power, so maybe the effectiveness of the congressperson's requests varies by who they are...I guess I'll find out.
