Hi everyone,

I will be moving to the States on October 5th with a K1 visa. I currently live in Canada.

I was just wondering who all I need to contact (in terms of Canadian government agencies) when I move and when I need to contact them. I assume I have to notify OHIP, Ministry of Transportation etc. However, I won't be able to get a driver's license in the U.S. right away and was planning on using my Canadian license. Does anyone know what to do?

Thank you!

Did not notify anyone cept for tax people and stop the GST checks. No need to tell anyone.

Most Canadians can get a US drivers license with their passport and Canadian drivers license, Canada has an agreement with the USA.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

this varies state by state.. some can just exchange their Canadian license for a US one but others have to take all the tests over again...

As Inky noted, don't forget the CRA. Also change your address with your bank, and if you're getting a new phone in the states contact your phone provider (after you get a new phone :P).

I know you generally have to notify the Ministry of Transportation etc within a week of moving even if your address change is within Canada. Wouldn't I need to contact them if I move to the U.S. as well as OHIP etc?

Florida has one of the one for one exchanges with Canada but I need to wait for my SSN. I don't want to be stuck without a license for that long, especially since my fiance is going to deploy shortly after I move.

Yes which is exactly why I said most Canadians. OP doesn't list where they are moving to etc so cannot give a clearer answer.

You don't have to notify transportation unless you are canceling your drivers license then your screwed for driving on it.

You don't have to notify OHIP because it automatically cancels after you have been outside Canada a certain period of time.

So I found out that I need to contact CRA, OHIP, and the post office when I move. I can use my driver's license until I actually hand it in to get a new one in Florida. I can't believe how hard it was to find this information though!

Yes, that sounds right. If you want your mail in Canada to forward, you'll need to go to Canada Post and pay the fee to forward your mail before you leave.

I only contacted the CRA when I filed my taxes and it was fine (but I didn't qualify for GST cheques so I had nothing to return).

Removing Conditions

Sent package to VSC - 8/12/11

NOA1 - 8/16/11

Biometrics - 9/14/11

Any creditors with whom you still have a loan or outstanding balance (ie CC or bank) need to be notified. And yes it is worth paying the $$$ to Canada Post to forward your snail mail (you can do it online) - you never know what might be coming to you in the next 6 months.

If you want to do it in an orderly manner, you should notify OHIP - there is a form you can fax...go to their website or google 'cancelling OHIP'.
