Hello all. I had a nice experiance and wanted to see if any of you have had similar opportunities. Before Malcon came, I met a Nigerian at a garage sale. We have kept in touch some and since Malcon has been here, we have met in person and talked quite a bit. He has been here for 15 years or something, so he is a great resource for Malcon. Early on when we talked, he said that there used to be a Nigerian Association in the town near where we live. He said that it had pretty much disbanded, but they were trying to get it going again. Well, they had a meeting to try to start it up again. Malcon and I went. It was very interesting. There were about 15-20 Nigerians all in one place. Malcon is very shy and doesn't particularly like new situations with new people, but I think he like it just being around that many Nigerians. I loved hearing them talk (both their accents and they prases and ways of speech). It made me realize that a lot of the things/ways Malcon says things is a Nigerian way of speaking, not just his. They are planning on having more meetings. The focus seems as if it will be on helping Nigerians to be more visiable in this area, helping people, and allowing social and cultural exchanges. I am really excited about this and the meeting was very fun and educational for me. Have any of you had the opportunity to do anything like this? Share any experiances you have had.

We have a Nigerian Association here as well. I found they have a site on the web, but couldnt see anything about meetings and such. It would really be nice. I know they do a big thing every year for their independence day.

There is one in my area. At first my Sweetee was wanted to get adjusted. Now he is feening (SP??), so we will be connecting soon. I think it is good for them to network with others of their culture. Even though I take him by friends shop (Nigerian Stylist) let him say hello on a regular basis. He's greatest absence is the food, because I don't know how to cook it. But we have a restaurant we frequent but not enough, we need leftovers.....

hello all,

well ikenna and i belong to a Nigerian organization here in Louisiana. We attend the monthly meetings, pay dues, and participate in the social events. My favorite is the Independence Day gathering. I found out about the organization from other Nigerians living in our area. We have made many friends within the organization and we all sometimes get together on weekends and go on outings. In April, a number of us will be traveling to Philly to attend a family gathering for all the kinsmen(residing in USA) of Iyke's community of Udi in Enugu, Nigeria. We are really looking forward to it, because there are so many of them here in the U.S. and through the organization, Iyke has found many of them. I think there are Nigerian organizations in just about every state here in the USA. It's a good organization because it focuses a lot on helping other Naijas (regardless of tribe) in gaining employment, immigration issues, etc. and also getting them in contact with other Nigerians that they may not even know are here in the same area as they are. It has been a learning experience for me and I enjoy spending time with them. Im especially happy about the organization b/c it gives hubby the chance to spend time with other Nigerians and catch up on what is going on back home.
