It was the post colonial era and some insensitivity was still evident

It might help to substitute 'goat' for 'horse' and 'sheeps milk' for 'whisky' until she is more up to familiar with local customs - and it would be more sensitive vis a vis religious taboos on western fire-water

If I can't call you Eric, may I call you Mitt or Barack or Barry ? I have led an insular life and I couldnt master a real Afghan name unless it was 'Cliff' or similar. I see you are Afghan now but were you born in Hawaii ? - its best to get these things settled at an early stage

However, I have noticed that the swear word throwers and hate mongers invariably have skeleton profiles, so if I were a VJ ghost I would have an incredibly complex profile with lots of photos of my wives and children and seal corpses drying in the arctic air and give an exact location which would have to be a map reference..

I would argue that your situation doesnt speak for most people. In my neck of the woods these words are very common. One thing I do find different/odd about my wife's culture is that the birthday boy/girl pays for party. As far as who will pay for dinner, IMO who ever did the inviting should pay unless the other insists to pay for their own.

You do have a point. A friend of mine married a very gracious southern gent from New Orleans, and my word. He'll open doors for anyone, refuse to let people pay for things, and the manners + Louisanna drawl = 100% charm.

They were doing that while they owned slaves at the same time... I know it's superficial as I have listened to em in the smoke room at 3am after a lot of whisky...in Georgia. They open doors for the black cleaning staff and smile and call them 'sir', but my, my, listen to em when they are alone.
