To all those in the know: What are your recommendations for a laptop for MS Office/Open Office, web surfing, movie watching on the road? Moderate price.

Current Dell Vostro is running XP and weighs a ton.

After some research I was going to buy an Acer or Toshiba laptop. They seemed to have the best reviews.

I ended up buying an Acer from Newegg. I've had it for 6 months now without a single problem.

There are a couple that I'd recommend. Are you brand conscious? What is a moderate price for you?

Sony VAIO E is decently priced. It weighs around 6lbs. But $399.99 + tax is a pretty good deal...considering Sony brand usually runs high.

Lenovo is also a pretty good brand, from what I've heard. It weighs less, at 5.2lbs. And it's less expensive $369.99 + tax.

Both have pretty decent specs for your purpose...word processing, surfing, movies. I'd recommend going with an Intel processor over an AMD. Intel chips really do run cooler than AMD. And Windows 7 OS is also wonderful. WinXP was a great OS, but Win 7 is much better, IMHO.

Good luck with whatever you decide! I hope I helped you some.

I've been buying from Newegg for quite a while and have been trying to sift through the choices. Which Acer did you get? I see the keys looking awfully flimsy (or maybe the ones I see on display in the stores are just getting beat up). Any problems/annoyances to speak of?

I would not buy another HP,completely dissatisfied with the product, even though their product is badly designed lack of proper ventilation.

Saw bunch of similar problem on same line called HP talked to guy and they wanted $600 buck for replacement parts, I was like I can buy a brand new machine for $600 bucks.

Dell are good but they lose on looks and weight, Lenovo are good, I have few problem with keyboard but I m hearing that is common problem on that Lenovo model. Yet for money Lenovo looks good .

We have had a few laptops recently (all within the past year).

Samsung (gift to FIL) was in his possession for less than a week and it broke. He shipped it back and we took it to Best Buy and it was covered under the manufacturer's warranty.

So then we switched to a Toshiba. It's ok with really bad sound quality and max volume is incredibly weak. The worst part is the screen brightness kinda has a mind of its own. It sits in a drawer and collects dust (I should sell it while I can still get $250 to $300 for it).

The Samsung and Toshiba were in the $600 to $800 range. The samsung looked cool (it was like a silvery white and very thin). But I would not recommend either the Samsung or Toshiba from my experiences.

My wife got a Sony Vaio (pretty much bought it cause it was hot pink). This was a couple years ago. She absolutely loved it but I stepped on it and broke the screen. headbonk.gif

My desktop computer is a Gateway. I bought it for the price and it's ok. Don't really know why but the internet is much slower on the desktop than on my laptop...Can't figure it out (maybe it is an antennae problem?). Bought it because for $500 or $550 (years ago) it came with the monitor, tower, speakers, and printer, all for $500-$550.

My wife uses my Sony Vaio and doesn't even want to touch her piece of ####### Toshiba. The Vaio is more expensive (retailed for $1300 at the time) so maybe that is why it is so much better. But it destroys the Toshiba and Samsung.

India, gun buyback and steamroll.

The best laptop I've had was a Toshiba Satellite that I bought 2+ years ago for $299.00 + tax. It's still in mint condition but decided to upgrade because it didn't come with a webcam.

I just purchased my new Toshiba (I think I'll be sticking to Toshiba from now on, I've had Dells and Compaqs before, which eventually died) directly from Toshiba's website. They have pretty good deals for good computers.

I got my new Toshiba Satellite 14" (I like smaller laptops) with built-in webcam, HDMI, 500 GB, 3 GB RAM, Windows 7 64-bits, Intel Pentium Processor 2.00 GHz all for $425.00 final price. I think it's a very good price and the laptop looks beautiful. I love it because I can hook it up to our new LCD TV using a HDMI cable I got for $1.77 on Amazon.

Acer

I have had two acer laptops and an acer screen

Thing about other makes is they can be fussy about spare parts

Acer takes a generic hard drive etc no problem

get one that is expandable to 4 gig of RAM for windows 7 and has a webcam inbuilt

they are all multi voltage

work out your required drive capacity then double it

try and get windows 7 professional pre -installed

I put acronis on mine - backed up an image, killed all the bloatware and now its stripped down to the min and is slick and fast !

Lenove, they have deals for Visa Cardholders and check their outlet store.

Toshiba here too. Have had 5 now. Just bought a new one last week as my last one was about 3 years old and getting slow and boggy. 15-16 inch, 4 gb's of memory, 320 gigs of storage and built in webcam and wifi. The sound is not the best but adequate though. (I run mine through the speakers in my truck wireless. More than adequate and is tough to handle the constant use I give it and bouncing around. Intel over AMD is the best. Only a tad more and worth it.

Take the advice and strip it down of all the stupid software that comes with it that is not needed. Of course windows 7/64 bit. Paid 350.00 but they made me pay 50 for the recovery software now.
