Boise, Idaho

4 seasons... but very little snow in town..because of the mountains..But there is a Ski Resort 16 miles away

Temp doesn't get much over 103..usually 90's during the summer, teens in the winter

Low humidity

Lots of activities..outdoor and indoor.. Winter or Summer..

Still alot of rural areas to live if you want that...

avg. house cost around $200,000 in Boise and alot less in the other Cities..within 10 miles..

Still a friendly place to live....

Hello All,

I dont know may be some VJ member like it or not. But i just wanted to know from our VJ member from their past experience about the above subject.

Which is the best place to live in America? From the all point of view like job, money, social life, safe place and everything. This is just a simple question if you dont wanna a reply dont but this is for my info.

Your opinion will be greatly appreciable.

I have two option 1. Atlanta, GA. 2. Dallas, TX.

Thanks,

K

We live 22 miles south of Atlanta - my husband has been here about 30 years and I have been here almost 2 1/2 years now. We both love it. I LOVE the weather - sure it is hot and humid for 2 1/2 months of the year (last half of June, July and August) but the rest of the year more than makes up for it with fantastic weather - long, slow Springs from February to May where each week brings a different tree into bloom until 3/4 of the greenery is flowery - long slow autumns with changing colours and beautiful fresh days and cool nights, and short winters that usually get into the 40s and 50s every day. The scenery is fantastic -mountains in the north, rolling hills in the centre to swamps in the south - waterfalls abound; natural parks abound; Atlanta is very cosmopolitan - world class symphony, art galleries, museums, sports teams, shopping; excellent restaurants, mass transit readily available; many educational facilities; good hospitals; lots of job opportunities especially in the IT industry and the head office for many world businesses; excellent airport; etc. The bad things are heavy traffic, thunderstorms in the summer, crime statistics (although as a Canadian most US cities have crime problems in comparison), no Tim Horton's donuts (VBG) - and oh yeah, did I mention traffic?! House prices can be quite reasonable south of the city to totally unreasonable north of the city. There are many smaller cities that make up the Greater Atlanta area and a lot will depend on in which part of the city you are located.

I'm sorry, I've heard nothing but negative things about Oregon...the weather, the economy, house prices, etc.

Plus, I'm biased...I think the south kicks ###. Places like Dallas, Houston, Austin, Raleigh, Atlanta...all are amazing places to live. Basically, every large city in the south is doing well right now apart from New Orleans. Your husband is wise to move away from there; it's nice to visit, but it must be hell on earth living there right now. :(

For those who like hot weather, I'd say Arizona. My in-laws live in Northern Arizona and it's just gorgeous there! Cool in the winter and hot in the summer. I'm going to live there once I move to the US.

I also love San Francisco...it's just a bit tooo cold in the summer for me.

And Portland, OR is a really great place, with lots of friendly people!

San Franciso has to be one of the most expensive places to live in the US right now, so keep that in mind if you're considering SF.

It all depends on what you like. I like my town (Charleston, SC), but unless you're living downtown (which is expensive), it can be a pain to really get anywhere.

If you're used to and enjoy a more European way of life (ie, businesses mixed in with residential areas, the ability to travel a lot of places on foot, the availability of mass transportation) then New York is a great place, as is DC. I've not been to Boston, but I've heard some good things about it, too.

What types of places do you like? Big cities? Quaint towns? Mass transportation? Do you prefer the beach or the ocean? Do you like snowy winters or hot summers? That info would help us figure out which cities might fit you.

1. Atlanta, GA. 2. Dallas, TX.
I consider both to be simply uninhabitable.

IMHO, the solution is as follows:

1). Draw a line across the U.S. through Washington D.C. Exclude everywhere south of that line.

2). Now exclude California and Oregon just on general principle.

3). Now exclude New Jersey (smell), Deleware (too close to NJ), and most of the north east (say, New England except for Maine and upstate New York). The politics and taxes there are just insane.

4). Now exclude the fly-over states - that's everything between the Rocky Mountains and the East Coast, which does not border Canada. It's just too boring and too far away from anything interesting, or has other problems.

So what's left? Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Alaska.

You can safely exclude North Dakota, Montana, and Idaho. if you want to have any kind of decent job with good pay. You eliminate for smell, that probably excludes Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota. That means the only places worth living in the U.S. are:

Maine, New York, Michigan, Washington, and Alaska.

Personally, I chose Alaska (moved here from Virginia, and after living in Texas). I don't recommend it for you though because we don't need any more people up here - so maybe try, um, Maine?

FWIW, I have seen a lot of the U.S. - and mostly by car or motorcycle. You'd be amazed at how much it smells. The only states I have NOT been to are Idaho, North Dakota, and Nebraska. I don't see any reason to go to any of those either - my guess is they are pretty stinky.

Good luck!

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Maine is beautiful, sure, but jobs are not very easy to come by, the cost of living is relatively high, and the taxes really are insane!

I'd recommend New Hampshire to anyone looking at the northeast; it has a very low tax burden, is still a pretty state and doesn't smell.

;)

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

I wouldn't touch New England with a barge pole. It's a beautiful area...my mother's family is from Connecticut, so I've been there many times...but the cost of living is insane and job growth is supposed to be in negative numbers for most of the region from what I've read. All in all not a positive picture. All of my relatives younger than 40 have left New England simply to have a decent standard of living. Kinda sad. :(

I hate to say it, because it's my home state, but michigan's economy is in the toilet right now. although if you were looking to buy a house you'd find a good deal!

I'm partial to the midwest- like having 4 seasons, friendly, down to earth people, etc. The Indianapolis area is surprisingly nice. Nice downtown with plenty to see and do, a good buzz about the city, excellent neighborhoods (once you get past the not so excellent neighborhoods that surround downtown, of course), and a decent economy, low taxes, LOW house prices and cost of living...

I miss the lakes of michigan, though! If you are a very outdoorsy person Indy probably wouldn't suit you.
