My husband and I filed the i-751 to lift my conditional status about a week ago (green card expires end of October). I was surprised to find a letter in the mail today so quickly from DHS, but was even more surprised about the contents.

The letter says that my conditional resident status has been extended for a period of one year. I'm still eligible to work and travel during this time, and I'll need to go in for another Biometrics appointment. That's fine and all, but why would it only be extended for one year? I was under the impression that I would be getting a permanent residency after this application. My best guess is that we didn't provide enough evidence to lift the condition, but there was enough to extend it for a year? Does anyone have any insight on this?

I heard that ones. Where greencard got extended for a year. The situation there was, that they forgot to submit an affidavit from friends, they called USCIS and found out about that. When they submit it, they got a 10 yr greencard a month later.

This is the norm. Your status is extended while the petition is processed.

it's normal. the process can take 6 months or more. it takes several months. by that time, your GC will have expired, that's why they extend another year, while the process is ongoing.

with the letter, once the card expires, you can still work and travel until you get the 10 year GC.

everyone get's the letter, it has nothing to do with the evidence sent.

While the others above have addressed your question regarding the letter, I wish to clarify another part of your post.

I was under the impression that I would be getting a permanent residency after this application.

You have already obtained permanent residency, in that you are allowed to live, work and travel from and back into USA. However, permanent residency is not permanent. Once your new Green Card is issued, it only has a 10 year validity at which point you must file to extend it another 10 years or leave USA and abandon permanent residency. Every 10 years new fees must be paid and paperwork filed.

Another option is to petition for citizenship once you become eligible. After that there are no more petitions to file or expired cards to renew.

You automatically get a letter stating that your green card is extended for 1 year (work and travel). In a bit, you'll receive a biometrics appointment date (fingerprinting). Then you just wait to see if you're approved for the 10 year green card.
