Hi All,

I'm hoping I can get some help with my situation. My wife and I recently moved back to her hometown in California from New York City. In the process of getting settled here, all of our mail was already setup to be forwarded to an address here. Well guess what, after waiting for months for our AOS interview letter to arrive, it finally arrived in the mail two days ago (Aug 26, 2011). Dated August, 16 2011, we are scheduled to meet with USCIS Sept 23, 2011 in Garden City, NY. I was hoping to have the interview prior to our departure from NYC. But, you know how life is...My question, is there any way to request for a change of interview location with USCIS, or will we have to fly all the way out to NYC to attend the interview? I'm a little worried as well because my wife and I are currently in transition and wonder what USCIS will think if the two of us do not currently have employment...

Thank you in advance! :-)

Kristian

Yes, you need to change your address with them by calling the number they tell you to call on all of your NOAs if you change your address.

Your I-864 needs to be current when it is adjudicated, so you will need to give them an updated one at the interview, and possibly get a co-sponsor.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

I just moved the opposite way, from California to Delaware. We had our interview scheduled in less than a month in California. I changed my address (I am the immigrant) online for the I485, I131 and I765, and changed it for my citizen wife online for the I130. I also snail mailed an I865 address change for my wife.

I then called USCIS, who said they cannot confirm the address change. However, he did write the California office to reschedule the interview to the office nearest Delaware. Now I will sit back and wait to see what happens again, and to be sure I will call them before the CA interview date if I don't hear before then.

Anyone else have any experience with this?

You're lucky, goverment mail isn't forwarded so ti would have been returned to sender. SOME people have had theirs forwarded but it's not supposed to be.

Sounds to me like you'll need to reschedule, bearing in mind that more often that I'd be comfortable with the reschedule doesn't go through propertly an you're denied for missing the interview. That's able to be appealed but adds months to the service. For peace of mind I would fly to NYC for the interview. As for employment, yes you need a cosponsor, if you already do then don't stress.

I don't think they can attend the interview in NY because they moved to CA and NY does not have jurisdiction over their residence in CA. Just like you can't apply to any state you want, because you must have your interview at your local office, not where you wish.

Yes but when they filed they resided there. When their interview was scheduled they resided there. I would attend the interview in NY OR go make an INFOPASS now before you leave to make sure it's' rescheduled for the new residence...

Member Juliava had this issue, and moved after interview in old location. The fact that she lived there when she filed didn't matter - the whole file had to be moved to the new location and it added months to the process. The local office that approves the AOS has to jurisdiction over the applicant's current place of residence.
