I'm confused by your timeline. You haven't finished the IR1 process but also have a timeline for a completed N-400. Which is it? Are you finished and the immigrant is now a USC? Or are you still not finished with the IR1 (married more than 2 years).. if so, there's still time to get an RFE but most likely he'll just sign it at the interview.

I'm sure it wasn't your intention, but unless you actually ADMITTED it was a scanned copy and not original , going to the effort of printing it in colour and what not says fraud to me. The "they never asked if it was real" doesn't matter because you went to great lengths to make it APPEAR original when it wasn't. It wasn't a "legit" signature because it wasn't REAL. It was a digitally scanned copy of his actual signature. It might have looked the same but loss of integrity of the image makes it not the same as "original" which is what USCIS requires.

I only mention this because fraud is bad. You don't want to cut corners for a little bit of saved time when it could bring your world down.

Because applicants are undertaking special printing technics, NVC started inststing on blue ink signature. Now with color printing technics, they may some with some other rules. It is neither good to do that nor good to share such things. And admitting to such acts is ever more dangerous. Please refrain from such acts (doing, suggeting and sharing).

There is no NVC rule that requires signatures to be in blue ink. It's not even a "preferred" color, so not sure where people are getting their information.

NVC has already started asking for Blue or Blank pen usage - I reproduced here below the relevant portion of the RFE i received:

Blue is a preferred colour for signatures on any legal document as it is obviously an original.

There are cases where USCIS returned documents to people because they wanted "original signatures" and people were confused because they WERE original signatures... USCIS just couldn't tell.

Black is fine, true, but blue is better. I went and bought a blue pen specifically to sign USCIS documents. The process is important to me and risking an RFE 'cause I can't be bothered going to walmart, or staples or whatever to get a blue pen just seemed ridiculous. Personal opinion of course but I've gone through the process without RFE, and no interview for AOS so it worked out for me.

I don't think anyone should go out of their way to sign in blue. If you can, yes, sign in blue, but black is fine, too.

Blue will be the one color pen that NVC will be asking us to use in the near future, as they are getting good photo copies of the documents that need to be signed and black ink signatures is becoming difficult for them to figure out if the document is original or a good copy.

With rule still stating us to use black pen, NVC is responding in writing to use either black or blue. I know of cases where guys used black pen ink and got RFE. Once you get an RFE there is nothing you can do about it, as no amount of reason will make them change their decision - Just see my case, which was closed on 8/15 and is opened again as one of the supervisors by mistake processed the soft copy of my inquiry email. While NVC agreed that they should not have processed the softcopy of any document, they simply told me that it will take 20 business day for the highier ups to make a decision on reversing that wrong process, so she advised me to resend I-864, as it would be quicker that way.

Bottom line - just going by rule doesn't always give one the best result. Just like I should have sent a softcopy in my inquiry, it is safe to sign with blue ink pen.

I definitely agree with this. Its always better to send the original, I went to a USCIS support center and asked if they would accept scanned copy and the lady told me NO! Everything should be original copy.
