Question about showing assets

OK--it is simple:

1) You MUST file an I-864 for yourself, answering the income questions. There is no reason to answer the asset section.

2) Your grandmother must also file an I-864, answering all the sections--income as well as assets--and assuming she has enough combined income and assets, everything will be OK on the financial side of things.

Since you are not in the same household, your income/assets will not be combined, in other words, it will depend solely on her income/assets.

My husband (USC) is currently in law school, and only works on a part time basis. He has some savings in joint name with me, but an uncle of mine will be serving as a joint sponsor. Just to make sure I'm understanding this correctly, would our I-864 depend purely on my uncle's income and assets, as my husband and I are not in the same household as him? And am I right in saying that my husband's assets will not be counted at all because it rests solely on the joint sponsor's assets? Thanks

In effect, yes, however your husband AND your uncle each have to file a separate I-864. There is no reason to fill in the asset section for either of them unless your uncle falls short on the income requirements, and needs his assets to make up the shortfall.

Thanks very much for clarifying this and your help is much appreciated. We will certainly keep this in mind when completing the I-864. I often don't know what I would do without VJ and the helpful folks within the VJ community. Thanks again.
