King: Congress Hearings Must Embarrass White House on Immigration Amnesty

by Audrey Hudson

Posted 08/26/2011 ET

A key House Republican is calling for congressional hearings into President Obama’s decision to grant “administrative amnesty” by pulling out hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens already in the deportation pipeline.

“This is another effort on the part of the President to ignore the will of Congress, ignore the rule of law and ignore his own oath of office,” said Rep. Steve King (R. -Iowa), vice chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee on immigration and policy enforcement.

“The President is on the verge of being lawless himself,” King told HUMAN EVENTS.

“It’s politically motivated because they think this will get them the Hispanic vote,” King said.

The Obama administration last week announced its new strategy to deal with the 10 million people who are in the U.S. illegally.

“It’s clear that we can’t deport such a large number,” said Cecilia Muñoz, White House director of intergovernmental affairs.

“So, [the Homeland Security Department] along with the Department of Justice, will be reviewing the current deportation caseload to clear out low-priority cases on a case-by-case basis and make more room to deport people who have been convicted of crimes or pose a security risk. And they will take steps to keep low-priority cases out of the deportation pipeline in the first place,” Muñoz said.

King said Congress has limited powers in what it can do to force the Obama administration to adhere to immigration laws, but that it can cut funding to the departments involved “to send a powerful message to the White House. Or, we can hold hearings and bring them forward to publicly humiliate them until they become politically vulnerable, and at that point, Obama might withdraw such a position,” King said.

“We could also file a lawsuit, but if Obama is willing to defy the law, he’s perfectly capable of defying the court too,” King said.

Citing the oath each President must swear when taking office, King said Obama pledged to faithfully “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

“He’s faithfully repealing legislation, he is de facto repealing immigration law. He is redefining the law and deciding not to enforce it,” King said. “He’s advertising to potential illegal aliens in foreign countries to come here to America, and if it’s not convenient to you, you will not be deported,” King said.

“To let this go undermines our country. It’s the law, and he needs to enforce the law,” King said.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

This is one of the reasons I am suspecting that Obama the Socialist is evil and not just an incompetent inept moron.

What are the other reasons? Please do tell. If only we had you in Washington running the show I just know all our problems would be solved.

Here is another reason....in addition to getting amnesty, said illegal aliens also get work permits. Is this Obama's sick idea of a "jobs" program? Jobs for illegal aliens! What about jobs for the millions of chronic American unemployed?

What Obama is up to goes way past being an incompetent inept moron. It is treason. The guy is a sleazy self serving political hack. He needs to go. America deserves better.

Wow, such strong language.

In the first place the law has not changed. What's changed is enforcement policy. There are an estimated 12 million illegals in the country, and ICE has a total combined workforce of approximately 20,000. Obviously they need to prioritize their interdiction efforts. This is something any police force or DA understands intimately - you deploy your law enforcement and prosecution resources wisely, and prioritize. You can't put limitless effort on every case because there are limits. So you go after the most dangerous cases, the most egregious cases, the ones that most jeopardize public safety.

In the second place, I oppose any form of legalized work permits for anyone illegally in the country that ICE is moving down their priority list. We may not be after them, but that's no reason to give them a work permit. I agree with you on that. They are still likely to work here illegally but that's no reason to condone their being here or to encourage it or reward it.

In the third place, what's being discussed are WORK PERMITS, not jobs. They're being given a RIGHT to get a job, not an actual job. So calling this a "jobs program" is off base.

You should look a little more deeply at world history if this is your definition of evil.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Well at least he's at least trying to fulfill his promises. A lot of broken promises by Obama. Perhaps, he is on his way to keeping one of his campaign promises. Anyone that is complaining about a path to legalizing illegals should not have voted for Obama. Anyone who voted for him cannot complain about this. He promised a path to legalization for ALL illegals.

A large majority of the electorate oppose this move. Congress rejected his last attempt to pass the DREAM Act. So the Administration is trying an end run around Congress to impose policy on this country against the will of the electorate and without the consent of the other branches of government.

This is no longer a question of ideology, if it ever was. This is about 2012. This is about votes. And this administration is willing to compromise immigration laws for possible electoral gain. Buying votes.

I personally don't care who runs against Obama at this point. If they reverse this policy and enforce the laws we have in place now, they will be an improvement over this administration.

I agree that he is absoultely circumventing the laws. I was just pointing out that he promised a "comprehensive immigration reform (Scandal's wording)"... to illegals, that means a way for them to become legal in their minds.

I would disagree that this an attempt at buying votes. It's not like these folks are going to be citizens by election time. If anything I think it will cost him votes. It will piss more people off (such as yourself) who won't vote for him again and use this as a reason. Do you actually think there are going to be millions of people out there who are going to say, "Good, Obama kept his promise... now I will vote for him? I think even the people who want this to happen will still find a lot of other reasons not to vote for him (such as myself). i.e. Accomplishing "1" promise isn't going to garner my vote.
