Hi,

My first post on this great site. Allot of useful information I have been reading for week.

Myself and my girlfriend have only been together for 3 months. But we know exactly what we want to do. Will the US government get this, will they have an issue with our relationship being so new? If so what would you say is the minimum amount of time to be together before applying purely based on the application process?

I am from the UK. British. She is from the US. American. No convictions. I have a good job, no debt.

Also if we did apply and it was to soon would it prevent me from applying again in the near future?

MM

I have a question for you....have you met in person yet? I don't think that there is any set time frame for dating in order to file for a K-1 visa, however, one of the stipulations is that you must meet in person.

There is no minimum amount of time you need to be in a relationship to apply for a K-1. You just have to have seen each other in person within the last 2 years.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

You aren't applying. She is petitioning for you.

You are required to have met face to face.

No correct amount of time for your relationship. You do have to prove a bona fide relationship. Meaning that you are not doing this simply for immigration to the US. Do some reading in the K1 forum and the UK forum to get a sense of what is typically sufficient to prove the relationship.

Best of luck.

If you have met in person and can prove it (which it looks like you can) and you're both legally able and willing to get married, you qualify. The length of your relationship does not matter.

The criteria to meet in person has been met. The USC will petition for you. The process that follows will be months until that petition is approved. Add to that the time it takes to get to the actual visa interview. BY the time that happens you will have plenty of time to make sure you have some further evidence of the realtionship.

Don't worry :) Whirlwind romances happen all the time :) My husband and I were married less than a year after we met.

The requirement is to have meet in person. Did you do this? Besides that fact it is about showing enough proof you have begun a relationship, see VJ and USCIS, DOS guides on this. Have fun.

A prominent divorce lawyer answered my question on what kind of advice she could provide on selecting a partner next time. I asked her if it helped to date for a long, long time ? She told me:

"Marrying someone quickly is no indicator to how long a relationship will last." She went onto say that her parents were married within a few months and are still married 40 years later. The lawyer went onto say "The best indicator of how strong the bond is will be is WHEN YOU GO THROUGH HARD TIMES. That is when you will know what you have in a mate."

I think she was right. I dated someone for eight years, broke up at least twice that I couldn't marry. I stayed too long to try to help her (lol). Today, I got engaged within a couple of months and it feels so right and she is so sweet. Be confident because when you know, you know and to me, that might be a better indicator than dating someone for years in some cases but not all.

Good luck but back up your relationship with evidence. There are books out there that list 100 questions to ask before you get married. I would start there and discuss everything to make sure you are truly right for each other. Me and my fiance will go far beyond that. In our view, approval for the K-1 is important but we truly want this to last forever and we are both onboard to make that happen. We will truly know everything about each other and our families history when we walk in the door for the interview.

Follow this guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1guide

She will petition for you first. After that is approved, you will be able to apply at your local consulate for the visa. At that time, she will provide financial documents proving that she can support you at 125% of the poverty level or over. You have been together in person 3 times, have the tickets, passport stamps and photos to prove it. It won't matter that it has only been 3 months before she files the I-129F petition.

Hi, if you both have met.... and you were all VERY careful with filling out the K-1 forms then by all means, go get that packet mailed. I met my man online in August 2010 then I met in person December 2010. K-1 was filled out in Feb. :-)

It took me 3 months to really carefully prepare my k-1 forms and then after 5 months of waiting, I had NO RFE!!! Also, got an NOA2 in the mail in June 2011.

It's not even a year. :-) Right now he is in the process of setting his interview with the Embassy.

WOO HOO!

I am not sure if this information is right, but each USA citizen can only fill out UP to two k-1 forms in their life time. I am not sure if it means for the same beneficiary or for different beneficiary. Double check on that....
