50 states, 50 different statues on this issue. It wasn't until Bush made an issue out of illegals that our DMV even questioned citizen or LPR status. Sure made a huge issue out of it when my wife had that one year extension on her green card. What in the hell is a one year extension? Wouldn't renew her three year probationary drivers' license, but had a week long fight with the governors office, they appointed a guy in charge of immigration issues that the day before, never even heard of the USCIS. They finally issued her the full eight year license in Wisconsin.

So I go in there with her certificate, didn't even want to see it, the same guy that rejected her. Said next time, just have her check that she is a US citizen box. Nothing will change on her license. Now if she checked that US citizen box when she first applied for a drivers' license, wouldn't of have problems with the DMV, but would be in deep sh*t with the USCIS and could have been deported. But only because she was applying for US citizenship.

Same thing with the USCIS making a huge deal out of registering for selective service, no way in hell would have Bush activated that When enlistments were way down for his War with Iraq, hired mercenaries at ten times the price instead. These bastards didn't even have to comply with the rules of engagement that our enlisted troops had to, many were court martialed for this. Don't fire until you receive bullet wounds first.

We have over 1,525 different government agencies that were formed starting in the 70's, each has there own set of regulations your congressman never even heard about. USCIS is no exception.

But as far as your immigration status is concerned, make sure you keep the USCIS happy.

Regarding the DMV, don't even test driving on ice and snow, zero with the interstate, just drive around the block a couple of times. We don't have a single parallel parking spot in town, so they set up a couple of saw horses to test you on that. And they are not liable if they issue a drivers' license to a complete idiot, wonder why they are even there. But your insurance company is sure liable.

Just like any other governmental agency, talk to two different agents, get two completely different answers. Would think they would make their agents at least read their own rules.

It does make a difference in Georgia. When I got my citizenship, I went to the DMV with my certificate of nat and the clerks changed my status from non citizen to citizen on my DL and state ID and asked me if I wanted to register to vote.

Now, this ofcourse does make a big difference in GA as there is a new immigration law that just passed and in the future, when pulled over, the cop can ask you your immigration status.

I am not sure if the VA DMV clerk didnt know what there were doing or maybe VA doesnt have restrictions, but If I was you, I would go to another DMV just to be sure...

I went into the VA DMV this morning and was told that it is not important to them what my citizenship status is so I did not need to do anything. She said they would not just change anything unless my card was up for renewal. I reiterated that I had been told I needed to come in to update it and she said she has no idea what they would have been referring to. She said the only difference is the length of time they put on the expiry date is shorter for non-citizens when they issue a license or id.

Thoughts on whether I should go back another day and retry? I only have a state id (don't drive)so I am perfectly happy to leave it as is. Next time I renew I'll have my US passport with me as id.

Did you have a name-change (in which case they DO need to be informed) along with the naturalisation?

Passport - didn't see the point of having the card, but yes - will do

And, did you catch up now?

Do you now understand that the passport card is invaluable or are you still clueless and totally in the dark about its real purpose?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I went to the DMV in South Florida... to update my status and to register to vote... was told I dont have to unless I want to spend $25, and it would NOT change my expiration date... I was told I could just mail the application to register to vote along with a utility bill to prove the address. Got my voters reg card in the mail in 2 weeks... Nothing changed with the DMV... Am not worried about it.
