I have a CDL. There are different ones, depending on what type of vehicle you drive (tractor trailer, buses, etc) Then along with those go endorsements, such as Hazardous Materials, Air Brakes, Passenger. Each one of the endorsements requires something you test for. Some truck companies will hire and train, or you can go to a school and pay for it yourself.

As long as you have a clear driving record, they should probably hire you. Some will want experience, but others who are willing to train won't. You will have to get your regular drivers license first though if you don't already have it.

Good luck!

KRj,

Just as one of the other posters commented, there are 2 ways to obtain the CDL, you can attend a driving school and pay for it yourself or you get hired by one of the big Interstate trucking companies that will train you then you will get the license.

If you pay for the training yourself, just know that getting hired by a local company might be a challenge just due to the fact that those local jobs get snapped up by guys that want to get out of the long-haul end of driving. And now many insurance companies will not cover a driver with less than 2 years of recent driving experience. So one of the long haul companies will be your best chance to get hired.

Companies like: C.R. England; Werner Enterprises; Swift Transportation; J.B. Hunt; Tyson; Schneider; etc,. The holiday freight will start to move in a couple of months, so now is the time to get trained if you are interested to get a CDL and go to work. After the holidays or in January, things just slow down so much, it will be harder to get a driving position until the spring time.

Good luck with it if you decide to pursue this.

I also am a truck driver now for about 15 years. Yes if you go to school and get a CDL and have a clean driving record and no felonies then you will find a job driving a truck. There are many companies that hire trainees to come in and train after they finish school.

There is only one way to get a CDL and that is to go through a school. The companies that hire someone and get their license with them and train have their own schools and usually they are the schools to avoid if possible. Trust me on this and that is we have many people who can barely speak English out here on he roads driving big trucks.

Also though for you to think about is only about 1-2 out of every 10 people stay driving and most quit after 6-12 months. It may look glamorous and fun but it is a tough job and constant pain in the rear. The schools cost a lot of money so make sure that you want to do this work because you quit and that money is a huge waste.

Have any questions about driving then feel free to contact me and I will try to help.

I will try to answer the best I can and help. Yes the pay can be very good living but it takes time to get to the level of making a good living. Expect the first year or even two years before the wage becomes very livable.

I second everything said here and would like to add. The long haul companies will have you on the road for weeks at a time. So you will not see much of your loved ones.

This is right. Over the road drivers are gone a lot. Local driving tends to pay a lot less but one is home often. There are well paying local jobs but those usually want at least a couple years of experience and clean driving records and etc.
