Will it be an issue if my fiancé buys a two-way ticket?

The airlines will only charge you a fee on the return portion IF YOU DON'T CALL TO CANCEL THE RETURN. Just trying to make that clear. If you just don't show up and don't bother to cancel, yes, they could charge you. If you call to cancel, they will NOT charge you. I do lots of travel - trust me, I know. I am just trying to help. :)

Why on earth would they charge me if I don't call to cancel? As you said - they already have their money. They can't charge me for not giving them the chance to resell my ticket and make even more money. The jerks make enough money off of people like me.

In any case, he's probably going to pay for the flight then cancel the bank card before he leaves anyway. They can't charge a card that no longer exists.

Our Timeline:

April 2003: We "met" online through a mutual friend.

March/April 2004: He visited me in California and we hit it off, but didn't want to do a long-distance relationship.

July 7, 2009: We got back in touch with each other.

April 15, 2010: My previous relationship ended and we decided that he would come visit me again and see where things went.

May 25 2010: We saw each other again for the first time in six years!

June 23, 2010: We decided to try a relationship.

November 8, 2010: We got engaged!

January 3, 2011: I began to assemble the I-129F packet

March 14, 2011: Mailed out the I-129F packet

March 16, 2011: NOA-1

May 31, 2011: NOA-2

June 13, 2011: NVC received our approved I-129F

June 15, 2011: NVC approved the I-129F and sent it to London

July 1, 2011: He mailed the completed Packet 3 in

July 15: His medical exam

July 29: We called the consulate and got his interview date

September 6: His interview - approved!

September 25: He entered the U.S. with his visa

November 18: WE GOT MARRIED!

I'm only telling you what I know and trying to be helpful. But, to answer your initial question, it's not an issue to purchase a round-trip ticket. We did, and his return was to London...not even Kenya and they didn't question a thing :)

This is nothing that you have to be worried about

If you want you can cancel or let then know that you will change it if the ticket allow you that in no way it can be considered illegal. The airline is just trying to take advantages of the business volume and at the POE ( if they ask) this is something that can be clarified in a simple way and no reasons why not to understand

Truthfully I think it is all a money scam... In my case on Continental there is a dedicated run every day to Norway and a dedicated return to Newark. I have yet to see empty seats. I also may add there are hundreds of people on a list in case someone does not show up for their flight. SO, to charge 2 times more for a 1 way ticket I do not understand the reasoning. I figure on the 10 trips to Norway (20 total back and forth) they can suffer the loss of 1 trip in return. Worse comes to worse I guess I could always use my frequent flyer miles haha.

We purchased a round trip because it was less expensive...it's not an issue. But, PLEASE cancel the return - it's really rude not to because someone else might really need that seat on the plane...you never know, it could be a visa journey member  Plus, I have never in my life heard of an airline charging a fee to cancel a ticket...why would they? They already got paid.

Had you ever heard of Airline charging fees to check-in bag? had you ever heard of Airline charging extra to talk to real person? Had you ever heard of Airline charging fees to rebook your ticket even though ticket on new date would be cheaper than you originally paid for?

Now days airlines would charge you to make any changes to your ticket, Please understand Airlines always over sells their ticket they know some ppl would not show up, some would not make to their flight coz of the previous connection etc, so even if you dont show up they will let someone else go in your place.

I am just telling you from my personal experience being a frequent flier (hopes flying twice every week is considered frequent flyer or you might doubt that too... lol)

Two-way ticket is fine, just make sure to cancel the return flight once the first leg of the trip is completed, because some people had nasty experiences with the airline communicating their name to the DHS (required for all passengers arriving to or leaving the US) and they ended up with a denied AOS because it appeared that they had left the country without AP.

I think the rationale is, if you call up and cancel they may charge your credit card for the higher price of a one-way ticket. If you simply don't show up, they may not notice that you didn't use the second half and thus they won't charge you.

I'm not doing the airline any favors by being polite to them. My fiancé's visit was cut in half last month because the goddamn airlines stranded him in Phoenix. If someone else needs his seat, it's a pity but I'm not going to pay an extra $300 so someone else can have his seat on the return.

I think they overbook flights anyway in case someone misses their flight. Also airline employees can use the unused seats. I know for a fact there is NEVER an empty seat going to the UK-only coming back to the US. I think you guys are safe in not calling to cancel and not making someone else miss out. Airlines rake people over the coals all the time. I am in total agreement on this! Believe me, we are planning on doing the same thing!

7/15/11 Sent K1 Petition to Lockbox

8/10/11 STILL NO NOA1!

8/12/11 Called USCIS to get receipt number-NOA1 will be resent

8/16/11 Received NOA1 with date of 7/20/11

1/3/12 NOA2!!!

1/12/12 Got email notice we are through the NVC.

That would never happen, Airline just does not tell DHS that your left contry coz you have ticket. Arline will only inform DHS you left country after you check-in with airline and once they have scanned your ticket for boarding, boarding is complete flight leaves the gate thats when it goes in the system.
