My fiancé is preparing to buy his last ticket here upon his visa approval, and we've discovered that a one-way ticket is about $300 more than a two-way ticket, confusingly enough. We were thinking it would be a good idea to just buy a 2-way ticket and not use the return ticket, since it's cheaper. I wondered if the immigration folks at his point-of-entry are going to raise an eyebrow if he enters with a fiancé visa but has a two-way ticket. Will this be an issue?

Our Timeline:

April 2003: We "met" online through a mutual friend.

March/April 2004: He visited me in California and we hit it off, but didn't want to do a long-distance relationship.

July 7, 2009: We got back in touch with each other.

April 15, 2010: My previous relationship ended and we decided that he would come visit me again and see where things went.

May 25 2010: We saw each other again for the first time in six years!

June 23, 2010: We decided to try a relationship.

November 8, 2010: We got engaged!

January 3, 2011: I began to assemble the I-129F packet

March 14, 2011: Mailed out the I-129F packet

March 16, 2011: NOA-1

May 31, 2011: NOA-2

June 13, 2011: NVC received our approved I-129F

June 15, 2011: NVC approved the I-129F and sent it to London

July 1, 2011: He mailed the completed Packet 3 in

July 15: His medical exam

July 29: We called the consulate and got his interview date

September 6: His interview - approved!

September 25: He entered the U.S. with his visa

November 18: WE GOT MARRIED!

I wouldn't think so if you just explain the reason. Im planning on doing the same myself.

As long as you make sure to cancel the return flight with the airline after his arrival.

I read somewhere that buying a two way ticket and not travelling on the return is in 'violation' of airline ticket rules. This made me a bit nervous as of course if its cheaper you are going to buy a return rather than a one way!!! I am planning on doing the same myself but maybe keep quiet and don't mention to the people who are checking you in that you are in fact moving to the US and not planning on returning!

?? Customs will know you're not planning on returning when you have to show them your K1/Visa packet. So im not sure what you mean by that.

Plus, on my previous visits to USA they have always checked my return date and stamped it in my passport upon arrival there...

Not sure about the ticket violation rule.

I've purchased several round trip tickets and not used the second leg for one reason or another. He would probably have more difficulty were he to try and use the second leg of the journey without using the first. I really don't think CBP will care one way or the other if he has a return flight.

Customs will know you're not planning on returning, but the airline that checks you into your flight won't. So by the time anyone from the airline figures it out, you'll already be in the U.S.

On Subject however sligthly off.

Be carefull with airlines that try to make you buy roud trip tickets for immigrants .

I had a Heated discution with the carrier that im using today on my wife POE

THEY WILL LIE just to make a buck .

My discution

1) Sr TSA requierd that All NON US citizen have a round trip ( BS I call TSA and HLS they dont really care as longer the NON US citizen is coming on a approve CR or K Visa)

2) In MY Case Colombia requierd that there National have a Return Fly ( MORE BS I call DAS they dont care )

I wont get in More detail other than i call the supervisor of the air carrier a Lier and that if he make me buy a return ticket i will go to court to ensure this will not happen to anybody again.

We work hard for our Money and they just try to make a buck out of everything they can.

Last month wend i was w, my wife on her interview on my fly to Colombia the same carrier made me buy a return fly on the counter or they woldnt let me fly . I made sure i got all the Info before my wife fly this time .

She got in w. a one way

all the best to all

Its not an issue for K1 / CR1 all these visa immigration does not care what kinda ticket you buy.

Buy whichever is working out for you.

Upto you u might want to cancel or not show up at all, now days some airlines would even charge you to cancel ticket why bother in that case.

We purchased a round trip because it was less expensive...it's not an issue. But, PLEASE cancel the return - it's really rude not to because someone else might really need that seat on the plane...you never know, it could be a visa journey member  Plus, I have never in my life heard of an airline charging a fee to cancel a ticket...why would they? They already got paid.

I think the rationale is, if you call up and cancel they may charge your credit card for the higher price of a one-way ticket. If you simply don't show up, they may not notice that you didn't use the second half and thus they won't charge you.

I'm not doing the airline any favors by being polite to them. My fiancé's visit was cut in half last month because the goddamn airlines stranded him in Phoenix. If someone else needs his seat, it's a pity but I'm not going to pay an extra $300 so someone else can have his seat on the return.

I used a two way ticket when I entered on a K1 and I didn't have a problem. Some airlines will charge a fee if you don't use the return portion of your ticket so you might want to check this out. I used AA and didn't have any issues at all.

The airlines will only charge you a fee on the return portion IF YOU DON'T CALL TO CANCEL THE RETURN. Just trying to make that clear. If you just don't show up and don't bother to cancel, yes, they could charge you. If you call to cancel, they will NOT charge you. I do lots of travel - trust me, I know. I am just trying to help. :)
