Hi there,

I have been married less than two years and have been in the US for just about a year. I am still under my 2 years to lift or remove conditions on my residency. That won't happen until the summer of 2012. Am I allowed to travel outside of the U.S.(and even home country) before I lift these conditions? If so, what am I supposed to have with me in order to travel? Is a passport sufficient???

Any help greatly appreciated. i am hoping to go on holiday for a week outside of the US.

Thanks!

GC and a valid passport is all you need. no other travel document is needed.

I'm assuming you have a greencard? If so, you're free to come and go as you please! You just need to maintain residence in the US, which equals being in the country for at least 6 months/year.

You would use your passport and then show your greencard when coming back into the US.

My wife and I decided to have the same surname, nothing strange about that I hear, BUT I changed my name as well so we have both our surnames hyphenated. We have proof of name change, drivers license and SSN, but I have been told that I will need to send my U.K passport off to Washington DC. I was told that I would not be able to travel back to U.K and change it there next year when we visit as my name will be different from the airline tickets.

How much of this is right, I have my A.O.S/E.A.D interview next month and was thinking of sending off my passport straight after as I won't need it for a while.

Thanks

Dave :)

This was my experience

My passport is in my maiden name and my green card is in my married name.

I therefore booked tickets back to the UK in my passport name (maiden name) as the name on the ticket has to match the name on the passport. So I agree that you shouldnt have your name change done on your passport in the UK after your flight as your return tickets will not match the name on your passport. Coming back through customs I showed my passport in my maiden name and my green card in my married name to the customs officer and I also showed him my wedding certificate (which I had taken as proof of name change) and there was no problems. I will now be sending off my passport to Washington DC to have it changed into my married name for future travel. I didnt have enough time before this journey and even though people assured me that taking my wedding certificate would be fine I was still a little nervous about not getting back into the USA :o

Removal of Conditions

09/03/2012 - Window opens

10/03/2012 - Mailed I-751 via USPS Priority Mail

10/05/2012 - Arrived @ VSC

09/19/2012 - NOA1 dated (actually received 11/7/12)

12/11/2012 - Biometrics taken

12/03/2012 - Conditional Green Card expires

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I know I will need my passport for my interview next month, but as soon as the interview is over I will be sending it to Washington, I have already downloaded the form to fill in.

Thanks

Dave :)
