You do not have to include both of them.. but you need to send one of them.. Yeah they should be more clear :)

why in the world aren't these instructions not straightforward? it says "you may include a recent letter from your employer, You may also provide pay stub. ok, if you need it just say " send these documents "

Because it's not their job to hold your hand in the process, they're just suggesting to send those documents. I chose to send both, a letter of my employer saying how long I was with the company and how much I made a year (to support the I-864) and copies of two months worth of pay stubs to support the salary specified on the employer letter.

If you read it, it says "you may include" not that it's REQUIRED, so of course they won't say "send these documents". You don't need to send a letter from an employer. And you don't need to send pay stubs. Both are optional. Most people send them though as proof of current income.

The only things required in the AOS package:

-bar-coded cover sheet from payment portal

-completed and signed I-864

-tax information (tax return transcripts OR 1040s, W2s, and if applicable, other schedules and attachments)

Then there are of couse more requirements if you have a co-sponsor.
