How long can it take for a K1 beneficiary to begin working? I know the work authorization has to be done, but I wanna hear from experienced people who have gone through it... I am thinking about her adjustment and how we are going to live, daily routine, etc.

Nan came in with a K-1 visa in April 27th, we got married in May and in June we filed for AOS, AP and AE at the same time. Just last week I got word that they approved it and that the Employment authorization is in production. See my timeline for details.

Normally takes 60 to 90 Days...depending on application center...take a look at our timeline for

reference. We are now into citizenship phase which has gone very quickly.

The EAD will take between 2 - 3 months to get approved once filed. Yet, you need to see the timeline in realistic terms. Are you planning to marry right away and also sending the AOS packet right away? If not, you would need to add this time to the wait time for working. Additionally, in this economy, she may not be able to find a job right away. So, even though she may have her EAD in hand it may take her a while to find a job. I hope you have prepared for the additional expenses coming up...

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

March 18, 2011 - POE together. JFK and O'Hare airports. Legal wedding: May 16, 2011.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.

Agree with Aztec. I was lucky in that when I started looking it only took about a month to get a job. An Aussie friend with MUCH more experience in a different state was unemployed for close to a year... he just couldn't get hired, too much competition. Another friend from Canada took around 6 months of active looking.

**Edit - don't take this to mean she should start looking before she's authorized. A few people have done this and found jobs they loved but didn't have authority to start (so lost something they were really excited about). Some places won't even interview you without an EAD so it's a waste of their AND your time.
