I am just about to apply for my AOS and found this a little unsettling:

i am currently living in presque isle maine about as far north and far east as you can get without being in canada so for my medical exam I have to travel to Bangor which is just about 3 hours from here.... there i sone doctor listed for this area but he has a 6 month waiting list ha

then for biometrics i will have to travel to portland which is 5 hour drive and for interview i will also have to travel to portland another 5 hours so altogether thats 26 hours of driving booooooooo urns.......

has anyone else had to travel that far for immigration things?

So your driving 6 hours to get to a medical then not 3 hours?

You said you are traveling 3 hours to get to the medical, so I said 3 hours, I didn't add on the time you have to drive home because that doesn't count to 'getting to the medical' it counts to getting home.

I never said you drove the furthest, I said there are many members who have to travel very far for immigration process.

I don't usually get "preachy", but I can't resist...

You live in the largest city in Aroostook County, and the population is less than 10,000. That should tell you something about where you live - the sticks, the boonies, the weeds, etc. Expecting USCIS to have a field office in an area like that would be beyond unreasonable. They'd probably be able to get by with one IO and an admin to answer the phone, and they'd probably conduct one or two interviews a week.

When you choose to live in a remote area then you have to accept that some services, especially from the federal government, are going to be far away.

You got a municipal airport that's nearly as big as the city. Maybe you could consider getting a private plane.

12/15/2009 - K1 Visa Interview - APPROVED!

12/29/2009 - Married in Oakland, CA!

Don't take it personally....I think they're just trying to make you see that there are many people here all going through the craziness of immigration and we've all been made to do things that seem unreasonable. We had to go to London for hubby's medical, biometrics, and interview. It was a costly train ride each time...and a hotel stay as we had an early morning interview.

Good luck...and honestly, don't let any comments that felt like an attack bother you....this site is a great place for help!!

I live in the forgotten northwest of Ontario...had to travel to Toronto (18hrs one way) for my medical and Montreal(22hrs one way) for the interview. I expected it so safed up airmiles. Don't give up on the VJ forums, I found them extremely helpful, find some fellow members who you can relate to for continued support. I have to also say seeing and talking to VJ members at the Consulate while waiting for my interview was extremely calming. Good luck on your journey, it is long and stressful but well worth it!

Yeah, Jim was tortured by the Viet Cong while being in 'Nam in '67, so it left emotional scars.

I, however, know where you are coming from. I just took possession of my 1912 Ford Model T Torpedo Runabout and it huffs around nicely and really travels at about 35mph if I put the spark advance and throttle lever down. Three hours in a "T" seems like a vacation to me now where I can watch the scenery, so as a former pilot I suggest you get a Model T instead of a plane and enjoy the journey in itself instead as a means to an end.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

People are being ridiculously srz bznazz and all puffed up about nothing. I read your post as just a vent about having to travel far. Which I think we can all relate to. But hell you know! Better let everyone Tell You Things! Because if you didn't know now, dammit YOU WILL!

LOL
