Extremist in any culture make the culture look bad. I am from the south, and my REDNECK extremist have given a lot of people the wrong view about the people from the south. Just because most talk slow and chew tobacco doesn't mean the are idoits, just senseless for chewing tobacco. And so these Muslim Extremist are definitley tainting the view for many about other Muslims. But you do have to give it to these Muslim Extremist, the let you know when they are offended(probably a bit too thin skinned). It is so hard to speak about anything today without offending someone. I am not at all applauding what the pope said, I am not even sure what he said. All I know I have to keep my house clean first.

I think the problem is much more complicated than that.........my opinion is that extremists are growing in numbers as a direct result of US actions overseas.....

When you think about it this has more to do with Pakistan / Afghanistan than the middle east. Pakistan is the country which is harboring these terrorists..

Based on the OP. The pope has nothing to do with the US government. So why is he threatened, or is this the US fault as well??

I am Aussie but I will tell you what if I was American I would say ###### you to the rest of the world. When someone makes threats ###### them back. Reason being, no matter what Americans do they are now the new scapegoat for everyone elses problem. So America should say if your going to treat me like ###### I'll treat you like ######..

What right to nations and cultures who have brought humanity nothing but wars and misery to condemn the US...

Moral of the story. The pope should not have apologized to these neanderthals.. I am not even catholic but I would defend our european beliefs and heritage any time.. I didn't realize someone's opinion gives a muslim the right to want him dead..

ok, so i have to say it...i agree with the ol' infidel here. the pope says something that is potentially insulting to muslims, and they chant "Death to America" in the streets. what's the deal with that?

I haven't quite figured out how Pope=US. Most of the US is Protestant, not Catholic. The Pope has absolutely no influence over Protestants.

I say we should remove all US forces from the ME immediately. Remove all diplomatic peoples - everyone. Stop selling anything to the ME. Stop buying ANYthing from the ME. Yes, that includes oil. We'll manage to survive somehow. Send no more aid of any kind to the ME. Just let them live in their own little world. We'll spend our time trying to repair our relations with Europe, Canada, and all other non-ME countries that we've alienated under The Shrub's reign.

I figure it would take them maybe up to 100 years to kill each other off.

Back around the time of the crusades, the papacy was one of the 'instigators' who whipped up a lot of the reactionary christian zealotry (to counter that of the muslims). Back then the pope wielded a great deal of political influence over the european kings - which is the main reason why Henry VIII, after divorcing his wife was excommunicated by the catholic church. This led to the abolishment of the catholic church in Britain.

If people in the middle east still think that way (as associate the US with the pope in the same way), it highlights a general lack of education and understanding of the modern western world.The pope of course still has influence, but these days its greatly reduced IMO. Of course that's not to say that our foreign policies towards those countries since that time have done a great deal to change those impressions. It's no coincidence perhaps that many countries that were at one time or another under the yolk of european imperialism are inherently unstable or ruled by less than favourable regimes.

Various empires dating back even before Roman times have fought over various bits and pieces of Africa, for example. Is it really any surprise that today much of the continent is still economically impoverished and torn by civil strife?
