An update to this story:

Scotland Yard is to investigate a demonstration by Muslims outside Westminster Cathedral over Pope Benedict's remarks about Islam.

Around 100 people took part in Sunday's protest, which passed off peacefully without any arrests.

Since then the force has received a number of complaints from members of the public about the demonstration.

It is understood that some of the complaints relate to reported comments by the outspoken Islamic figure, Anjem Choudary - the former UK head of al-Muhajiroun.

Around 25 complaints have been received by the force.

Scotland Yard's Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, the country's most senior Muslim officer, said: "We have a long history of facilitating lawful demonstration and are keen to continue dialogue with any group wishing to protest.

"However, what we will not allow is for people to attend demonstrations and break the law.

"Currently officers are looking at what took place (on Sunday), and also other publicly-made statements, with a view to ascertain if any criminal offences have been committed.

"We will always proportionately police all protest but equally will take decisive action where crime is committed."

The force had an officer at the demonstration taking still photographs.

Well lets see the crusades did exisit years ago. Is Chiristianity violent today?

I think it would be sad for people to generalize that Islam is bad with out making their own research or actually getting to know some muslim people. Apart from what we see on TV the media is one sided and of course all we ever see boradcasted is ALL the BAD in the world not the good. Its messed up that the actions of a few are condeming the rest. There are plenty of good Muslims all over the world that dont share these idiotic extremist views.

Yes there are. But it doesn't matter.

The US revolutionary war was not actively supported by the majority of the population, if my American Economic History professor in college was correct. The war effort was actively supported by a large minority, actively opposed by a small minority with a significant portion of the population keeping a low profile.

In times of conflict, it matters very little what the 'silent majority' wants. They're silent. They don't matter. It's those who are willing to be heard, either through the pen or the sword, either in offense or defense, that define the course of history.

All those Muslims who don't support Al Qaeda, unless they take aggressive action to root it out, are irrelevant.

Where is the outrage from the world leaders with this bounty on the Pope's head by the extremist? If the US were to make any threat like that, other nations would have something to say about it. Are they afraid of retaliation / death threats? Where are the muslim religious leaders? Extremist are a well financed gang using religion to justify terror (IMO).

lets hope these scumbags are never succesful in their threats. I'd hate to think what the reaction would be like.

maybe we need to bring Rodney King into this: Can't we all just get along?

would it be wrong for me to start thinking that islam is a violent religion?

Careful.... words like that can bring the wrath of the 'Religion of Peace' down on you.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

All those Muslims who don't support Al Qaeda, unless they take aggressive action to root it out, are irrelevant.

To us perhaps. I think its oversimplistic to imply that muslims are some sort 'great' morass with a free and open dialogue between different "muslim" countries. I don't believe that is the case - and as you said the other week, many people don't say anything because those countries are ultimately repressive, who, if not banning protests outright, seriously regulate them; and in some cases are actually orchestrating them.

Few middle-eastern countries could be described as particularly liberal in their politics and general outlook, but even that assessment omits the fact that there are significant divisions between different branches of the muslim faith.

There is a level of animosity between Iraqi Shias Vs. Iranian Shias, is it even worth mentioning the Turks and Kurds in the same sentence? These are all muslims BTW.

What sort of "international islamic movement" do you expect from these people when fundamental political barriers are keeping people apart?

BTW - I'm all for seeing the Vatican scourged off the Earth. The most corrupt place I've ever been to in my life.

A notorious Muslim extremist told a demonstration in London yesterday that the Pope should face execution.

[...]

Choudary's appeal for the death of Pope Benedict was the second time he has been linked with apparent incitement to murder within a year.

Paul C(houdary)? :P
