Hi,

I apologize if this has been asked and answered before. I could not find it.

I am a Bulgarian citizen and I am married to a US citizen. I have been on a F-1 visa in the US since 1999. We are putting together the package for USCIS to change status. I have an old translation of my birth certificate that I got from Bulgaria. The translation was done by a sworn-in translator and the photocopy of the certificate attached to it is notarized by a Bulgarian notary (whose statement is also translated)in 2009. Is it ok to use a translation that is two years old or should I get a new one? Also, can I send a copy of the translation or do I need to send the one with the original seals? Since my mother has since switched to her maiden name, how do I indicate that in any of the forms?

Thanks in advance for the help.

See the example of requirement for translations. I would think what you have is fine but if you wanted to you, or anyone fluent in both languages could do a new one. The "certification" is the statement.

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Documents and translations without an expiration date are still valid in the US. I've been sending the USCIS copies of the same documents and translations since 2007 and there has never been an issue.

Never send original documents because you probably won't get to see them again. Photocopies of everything is all you need to send.
