Applying for SSN

Hi,

I read in the step-by-step guide section that to apply for a SSN you need two forms of ID, passport + another valid form of ID. In the SSA guide on the web (http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf) it says you need evidence of age (Birth Cert. or passport), evidence of identity (passport) and evidence of immigration status (I-94).

I can't see on the SSA instructions where it says two forms of ID are required, a passport seems to be valid for everything.

Does anyone know where point 4 in the step-by-step guide, "another form of valid ID" comes from? Is it through experience? Has anyone tried with just a passport or a passport + birth cert?

Ta,

Bob.

Correct - no AP until after you're married.

With regards to ID, when I went with my other half - they asked for his passport, but he also gave them his old UK license.. not sure if it was required or necessary, he just kind of forked everything over in one go :-)

And I guess I can't apply for AP till after we're married.

They did give us a receipt, just keep in mind if you apply too soon after entering the country on a k1 you will have to wait for the social security office to verify your legal status with DHS. We did it 15 days after arriving and we received a letter 10 days afterwords saying we had to wait for DHS approval.
