It's a good thing then that we still have a Constitution to protect our basic rights such as voting from such "proposals".

figuring at the end of the day, it is the state who offers/doesn't offer many 'welfare' programs and controls them, they could bar people from voting in state/local elections. They just couldn't bar them from federal elections.

Granted, but which Founding Father was it who observed (paraphrased) that, "When the people learn that they can vote themselves money, the country's in deep manure"?

The quote is "When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic" While its often attributed to Benjamin Franklin, there is no proof that he actually wrote or said it. It could be a case of "in the absence of proof it must be true"

If anyone noticed, in 1st world countries there is a problem of not having enough babies and governments "hand out" bonuses to citizens who choose to have babies. Even Russia is trying to introduce something of sorts. Is this another proof that USA is not a 1st world country anymore?

The problem is not in the handouts given to single mothers in the US. The problem is that handouts and the method of giving them are incorrectly applied creating situation when for some poor folks a scheme of having 5-6 kids seems a lucrative way to make a living. These folks would not be doing that if they had a good chance at decent education and employment.

It's been proposed that anyone who receives welfare or salary from the Government be precluded from voting.

I find it highly hypocritical that we accept stripping rights from criminals but not from welfare recipients. If it's OK to take away rights from some... why not from all?

And this wouldn't be mandatory anymore than being a criminal is mandatory. "If you do this, you lose some of your rights." That's been perfectly acceptable to most people for a long time. I wonder why they have a hard time justifying the morality of requiring welfare people to do the same.

It's a good thing then that we still have a Constitution to protect our basic rights such as voting from such "proposals".

See above. If you can suspend them for some... you can suspend them for all.

These folks would not be doing that if they had a good chance at decent education and employment.

You can't be serious! Are you implying that a lack of education/employment is the problem and not the fact that we pay people to be lazy?

You're either willfully ignorant or extremely naive to think that the same people would not act this way if certain conditions were different.

The people who do this sort of thing so it, not because of the need to, but because of the ability to. Education has nothing to do with it. A cradle to grave society is built upon the idea of mankinds laziness and unwillingness to overcome their lifestyle.

Opportunities are there if you're willing to take them in most areas. For a time (at least here in Texas) welfare was treated almost like umemployment. You actually had to attend training classes, you actually had to actively seek employment and they would help you find employment as well. If you didn't play by those rules, then you would lose your benefit.

When you hand someone money, with no stipulations on it. If you hand them money and they can buy whatever they want with that money, then you are creating a mentality that can't simply be cured by saying "hey look, here's more education." You've shown them they don't have to lift a finger and they can buy a Nintendo Wii, an Xbox, and buy Macaroni and Cheese for dinner and be happy about it. Hell, look at how many people on welfare buy cigarettes! Do you really expect someone who gets all of their basic needs in life and then some to want to better themselves? To not want to be a leech on society? Why give up the 'good life' of doing what you want, when you want, without consequence.

Let's just say that it is apocryphal and leave it at that. Beats the heck out of reversing the onus.

Cigarette smoking is an addiction, a disease.

If you think their life is so swell, why don't you join them?

It's easy. Give away all your possessions to your family members and friends and quit your job (unless you are already retired).

Voila, enjoy doing whatever you want on the government buck

you may find out that this kind of life just ain't as sweet as you imagined it :P

Way to completely miss the point.

Willfully ignorant it is then.

But tax cuts and loopholes for the wealthy are OK. Gotcha.
