Travel Insurance until Married?

Hello to all!

I was just curious to see if anyone had found a smart way to deal with travel/medical insurance coverage in the US during time that leads up to the wedding? Once we are married I will be placed into my Fiance's insurance through his work, but for the 2 weeks up until that point I really should be covered, and I can't seem to find anywhere that will offer me a policy without a return date to the UK, unless I opt for and pay for a full Annual cover (which obviously is a bit of a waste of money)... ANy good advice out there?

Thanks so much! Have a great day!

Don't use travel insurance- they may deny you if you have to claim, as you are not travelling, you are immigrating.

You might look into short term cover from a US insurer such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, but coverage and plans vary from state to state.

surely you could maybe get away with it cause you will be travelling? I will book some kind of insurance for mine too cause I am prone to issues surrounding my flights... But I was wondering this very same thing.

You might look into short term cover from a US insurer such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, but coverage and plans vary from state to state.

There are some providers in the US, that while they provide travel insurance, they do cover claims upon a call to their 24-hr number here in the US, no conditions/questions asked. Most of this is for emergency kind of treatments though, and depending on the premium, the limits of coverage change. Premiums start at about 100 dollars for 3-4 weeks. The one I found was IMG (http://www.imglobal.com)

They do offer coverage for non US nationals coming here. It is not a long term coverage.

I was actually looking into this heavily because of the same reason: my insurance will only cover future wife on the 1st day of the following month after marriage.

I called them up to find information about the return date. The person I spoke too said the 'return date' is meant to be the 'end of coverage date', thus you would not really have to return. Of course, he could be wrong, but then we found the provider in Poland and that seemed more reasonable and somehow my future wife seemed more confident, so we took that one (it was in their policies that you did not have to return to file a claim.)

I did carefully read the entire policy of IMG and did not find anything that made coverage depending upon return to country of origin either.

I did concur with Penguin_ie in that they could deny, but realistically, insurance here also (and often) denies people that are here -they just don't like to pay up-

At same time, while the intent is to immigrate, technically a K1 is not an immigration visa and most people have a return ticket.

Maybe others here have actual experience with a provider, I'd like to hear about that.

While we are at this, make sure you bring documentation of coverage in your native country, to avoid possible pre-existing conditions and the lapse in coverage rules some providers here use.

We did find a provider in her country (Poland) that will do the coverage by calling them upon a treatment needed and how it works is they call back the medical provider immediately to get them the payment/approval info. It was about half of what it is here.

We are also minimizing the exposure by timing her arrival, marriage in such a way that it would only be 10 days to 2 weeks what this provider will cover, before mine kicks in.

I was in the same predicament when I came over.

We ended up insuring myself through Seven Corners Inc. They have a special inbound immigrant insurance here https://www.sevencorners.com/insurance/inboundimmigrant/HW7C6Y3 which was very inexpensive and gave us peace of mind between the point of me flying, to us getting married and being added onto my wifes insurance.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi there

I spoke to my travel insurer today who stated, very specifically, that they would not cover a single trip over to the States even if I then did not want health cover whilst I was there, so I would look into this closely before deciding to use UK travel insurance for your trip over to the States prior to becoming an LPR.

I've had a look at Seven Corners, and their cover seems to be reasonable (you can use it for up to 5 years if necessary) but I was wondering what other insurers people used? Apparently, Blue Cross Shield does not cover the zip code I'm moving to (Ohio), so wondered if anyone knew of any other companies?

Thanks

L
