An Israeli man was killed on Saturday in a rocket strike launched from Gaza, medics said, the latest death in a three-day spasm of violence that has killed more than 30 people.

Israeli security officials said seven other people were wounded, including two children, by more than 50 rockets fired from the Hamas-ruled territory Saturday. In Gaza, an Israeli air strike wounded a Palestinian man seriously, medics said.

A militant group called the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) claimed responsibility for the deadly rocket strike at a house in the southern city of Beersheba.

Hamas's armed wing claimed responsibility for another attack that destroyed a home in the town of Ofakim.

It was the first time in months that Hamas had declared its involvement in rocket attacks against Israel, after largely observing a de facto truce since the end of a three-week offensive in January 2009.

Police Minister Yitzhak Aharonvitch said Israel's response would be "tough."

"The Israeli army knows how to respond and the response will be painful. ... The price will be very high," he said on Channel 2 television.

Israel has launched aerial attacks on Gaza that have killed 15 people, among them gunmen and five civilians including three children, since a deadly assault along its border killed eight Israelis Thursday.

Eli Bein, a spokesman for Magen David Paramedic services, said an Israeli man had died in hospital of injuries suffered in the rocket strike in Beersheba. Television stations showed a bloodstained sidewalk and the twisted metal remains of a vehicle near in an area where the victim was apparently struck.

At least two more people were wounded seriously in the same barrage, paramedics and police said.

An earlier rocket attack injured three Palestinian men from the occupied West Bank as they hid in a sand dune outside the Israeli city of Ashdod, a police spokeswoman said.

A military spokesman said more than 50 rockets and mortars had been fired at Israel during the day and 75 since Thursday.

The steady rocket fire has disrupted life in much of southern Israel. Many shelter in safe rooms made of reinforced concrete when the frequent air raid sirens blare.

Israeli leaders held consultations about a possible response to the Gaza rockets. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman issued a statement blaming the Palestinian self-rule government in the occupied West Bank for Thursday's violence.

The Palestinian leadership "bears full responsibility for the murderous terror attacks against Israelis who were on vacation," he said.

"The events of the past days prove that Palestinian talk of abandoning the path of terror and moving to diplomacy is as far from reality as the distance between Ramallah and the U.N. headquarters in New York."

Hamas said Friday it would "not allow the enemy to escalate its aggression without getting punished."

Israel has said the PRC was responsible for Thursday's gun ambush on the Egyptian border, a charge the group has denied. Israeli forces killed the group's commander in an air strike on Thursday.

Five Egyptian security personnel and seven gunmen were also killed in Thursday's clashes, an incident that has sparked a crisis in Israeli-Egyptian ties with Cairo saying it was recalling its ambassador to Tel Aviv earlier Saturday.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Beersheba is a relatively big city, not like Sderot or Ofakim. If the attacks continue, expect ground troops and battle tanks storming Gaza shortly.

Not everyone is innocent. We got some of their bad guys.

Israel has launched aerial attacks on Gaza that have killed 15 people, among them gunmen and five civilians including three children, since a deadly assault along its border killed eight Israelis Thursday.

The civilian losses are tragic and regrettable. Why do the militants fire rockets from populated areas? Why do they fire rockets at Israeli civilians at all?

No. But your willingness to take IDF and Israel to task, and say nothing at all in regard to the militants' tactics of using their own population as human shields in Gaza, speaks volumes.

You're trying to goad me into responding but I'm not taking the bait. I've already addressed this issue time and time again, Hamas is made up of maniacs, it was founded by a maniac. What more can I say?

The rocket barrages from the Islamic terrorists continue.

08.25.11

At least 20 rockets were fired at Israel's southern communities since Wednesday evening with calm nowhere in sight.

A rocket fired at Ashkelon Wednesday evening exploded near a house in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council. A 9-month-old baby was hit by glass splinters and sustained light to moderate wounds. He was taken to the Barzilai Medical Center. A vehicle caught fire and damage was also caused to several structures

Goading is a form of bullying, but all deny that any bullying goes on. Never mind that Muslim members are repeatedly demanded to respond for the "terrorists" on each thread, as though they are responsible for their acts and have to prove their worthiness each thread. Nevermind that the +1s are for one view only. Members of all types are made to feel welcome here.

Blah, blah, blah.

Firstly, there's no such thing as a religious terrorist. Secondly, it is not Hamas doing, they are trying to enforce the truce. Thirdly, lunatics will try everything possible to subvert the course of peace and I hope that no one falls for it.

Israeli air strikes test Gaza truce

Israeli air strikes test Gaza truce

Eight Palestinians killed amid calls from Hamas for the international community to intervene.

Last Modified: 25 Aug 2011 06:05

An unofficial truce was declared after four days of clashes which left 15 Palestinians dead [Reuters]

Israel has launched several attacks on Gaza, killing eight Palestinians and wounding at least 35 others, prompting Hamas to allege that the attacks violated an unofficial two-day-long truce.

Adham Abu Selmiya, a spokesman for Gaza's emergency services said eight people has been killed in a series of raids whicyh ended before dawn on Thursday, but said a sixth person, 22-year-old Adnan al Jakhbir, succumbed to injuries in the morning.

Four of the Palestinians were killed and several wounded during strikes carried out early on Thursday, after two Gaza fighters died in Israeli air strikes a day earlier.

During the afternoon, medics in Rafah pulled two more bodies from the wreckage of tunnels which were hit overnight, it said, naming the victims as Imad Abu Harb, 32, and Rajaa al-Sabhani, 19.

Medics in Gaza said an Israeli air strike on Wednesday evening killed 20-year-old Attiyeh Moqat. He was a member of the Palestinian resistance group Islamic Jihad.

Later, medics found the body of Ismail Amum, a 65 year old man who was killed in an earlier raid near Deir al Balah in central Gaza.

The latest air strike came after Palestinian fighters lobbed several rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel in retaliation for an earlier Israeli air strike in the border city of Rafah.

An earlier air raid during the day targeted a vehicle, killing Ismael al-Ismar, 34, an Islamic Jihad leader.

An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the strike, saying it had targeted "an activist linked to Islamic Jihad who was implicated in attempted terrorist actions in the Sinai".

According to the Israeli military, Ismar had "operated with terror elements in the Gaza Strip which have recently made several attempts to execute terror attacks in the Sinai, on the Israel-Egypt border".

The renewed attacks raised fears of a fresh descent into violence scarcely 48 hours after factions had agreed to end rocket fire on southern Israel, on condition that the Israeli Air Force also stopped its raids.

Shaky truce

Gaza's Hamas government accused Israel of violating the unwritten truce with its latest air strikes and called for UN intervention.

A statement issued by Hamas read: "Such aggressive behaviour confirms that Israel has no true intention of maintaining the truce and insists on escalating the situation. We call upon the international community and the United Nations in particular to pressure Israel to stop its aggression against our people."

The latest cycle of violence erupted on Thursday, when gunmen attacked cars and buses on a desert road near the Red Sea resort town of Eilat, killing eight in an attack blamed on the Popular Resistance Committees.

In the following days, Israeli air strikes killed 15 Gazans, and armed factions in Gaza lobbed more than 100 rockets and mortar shells across the border, killing one man.

During the hunt for Thursday's attackers, Israeli troops shot dead an Egyptian army officer and four soldiers - causing a diplomatic rift between the two countries.

On Wednesday, Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Alyoum reported that Egyptian authorities have identified three of the people responsible for the attacks in Eliat. The report claims that the attackers were from the Sinai region of Egypt, not Gaza as Israel suspects.

The Israelis and Egyptians are currently conducting an investigation into the matter.
