I'm a U.S. citizen living and working in Afghanistan. I married to a Thai woman last June in Thailand, officially registered followed by a Temple ceremony. I have no residence in the USA. My wife owns a home and land in Sukhothai, living with her two children and her mother who farms. My wife doesn't work now for one year. What do I need to do to obtain U.S. citizenship for her at this point? I'm confused by most of the official sites.

She is not eligible for US Citizenship just because she is married to you. The first step would toward citizenship would be to obtain a spousal visa, become domiciled in the US, obtain a Greencard (permanent residency), and live there for 3 years. If she gets a Greencard, then she must live in the US. If you don't plan to live in the US, then she cannot get a Greencard and cannot get citizenship.

If you are planning to move to the US, then start studying up on spousal visas.

The type of visa you'd be looking for is a CR-1 immigrant visa. She would become a permanent resident once she goes to the US to establish domicile.

the U.S. citizen is the one that needs to establish domicile in the U.S. , she will receive her permanent residence card shortly after arriving in the U.S. assuming the spousal visa is approved!

Well, the answer is a little complicated. There is a process you must follow. First, you have to apply for CR-1 visa for her and CR-2 for the children. Then, after entering the US and living there for a period of 4 years, she would be eligible to apply for citizenship.

Thank you all for the clarity. I have a clear direction now. Best to you.

Unfortunately your answer is inaccurate. US Citizens don't apply for visas for themselves or anybody else. Foreign spouse's can apply for visas only after their US Citizen spouse has filed a petition in their behalf and that petition is approved. A petition is not a visa application.

Second, a spouse of a US Citizen is eligible to apply for US Citizenship after THREE not FOUR years of permanent resident status.
