Immigration visa approved for my wife. Planning POE travel by train. Travelling via Amtrak from Montreal to New York.

Anyone done POE by train? Anything to be concerned about? Where does the immigration check happen - at the time of boarding in Montreal OR the border crossing OR upon arrival in New York?

Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not educated on this topic at all but perhaps she should call the boarding crossing and ask what to expect, what hours they do immigration, etc.

it happens at the border... i would be concerned about the amount of time to process, the train likely won't wait if the processing takes too long

YMMV

Trains and buses do not wait for people processing visas.

OP most people avoid trains and buses for POE on the K-1 or Spousal visas. I believe only one or two people have used a train. They may come online and leave an answer as to what they did. Other then that you will have to call and ask your questions to the train service and CBP for the trains.

I would call ahead and confirm they can do it.

I've taken the train to New York from Ontario and they process immigration on the train, while you stay in your seat. Makes me wonder if they can even process a visa like a K1.

I just did a search for POE BY TRAIN and see someone did it on the west Coast! They phoned ahead and they said they did do them there. But of course that was on the West coast. But like what others have stated, best to call. Good luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
