Raising the wages in most agri-business will greatly inflate the retail costs of those foods - thus making the wage increase pretty much moot. It's such a low margin business there isn't wiggle room unless you increase the price.

Living in a rural, agri-business based area where the largest local employers are meat-packing facilities, I can tell you first hand that there are constant job openings. The pay is decent for the area and depending on the company the benefits are on par with if not better than what I've had in years [very low deductible, $15 doc visits, $5-$20 Rx co-pays, vision, dental all for $17/wk single person].

One issue that happens with this type of work is the local pool of employees. Having been management at one of the facilities I can tell you that you can have 30 applicants come in a day. Of those applicants, there will be a handful [about 3] of hopeful illegals who won't make it through the system because of completely bogus papers. There will be former employees who have waited the required 6 months to 1 year to reapply [about 20] of which about a third will make it through the screening process [6-7]. The other 13? They will not be re-hire because they were previously fired due to conduct issues, they have used up their "can only work here 4 times" card, or they have new criminal records/couldn't pass the drug screening. Currently, a good handful [about 5 out of the 30] will be Haitians with TPS - depending on their interview and job appraisal there is a good chance they will be hired. Of the last 2? One will usually be fresh out of school [especially in the summer months] and the other will be a former migrant worker with good papers. The plant where I worked used e-verify - but if you spent time with some of the workers, you'd know that e-verify doesn't work. Good papers are hard to come by and you need to spend $$$$, but you can still get them.

Part of my point? Where I live there is a very limited pool from which to hire [total population ~45,000 in the two local counties]. According to the last census - people are fleeing the area. Even though the hourly positions are decent, very few people would move here just for a meat packing job. Just about all low level skilled workers in the area have worked at one if not both the plants [two different corporations]. Many have worked both - at least twice! To try and reduce turnover, the plants instituted rules of how many times you can be hired as well as "cooling off" periods between rehires. The plant I worked for had the 4-and-out rule - you could only work there four times, apply again and your application will be rejected.

There are fines associated with having employees on the books that don't pass the e-verify test - not sure if the fees I was aware of were based on any ongoing agreements with the feds after a handful of raids or are just federal law but it was $10,000 per employee. Seems sort of low I guess but my site employed 1700+ employees. Once upon a time, estimated totals of workers with questionable papers was over 80% - when I joined last year I still had about 10% of my department to let go.

I don't think having an illegal workforce kept the wages low. I think the fact that in this specific industry, the "captive audience" work force [only those close enough to make commuting make sense in a rural area and being the only game in town] keeps the wages lower. But, lower wages means your chicken nuggets aren't $9/doz.

Even though I had good relationships with many of the co-workers I had to let go for "misrepresentation/false information on job application/identify theft", I couldn't see eye to eye with the whole "but I'm adding to the economy" argument.

Yes, we need millions of illegal aliens, especially with this economy. We also need more natural disasters...we can't have enough of those either. And while I'm at it, I need another lobotomy.

You want to divorce this one and get married again?

Landscapers, low wage cooks, dishwashers, housekeepers....It's not a coincidence they are 90% Mexican! They want to be there, and they work hard.

The drug addicts work half a$$, are all doped up, and only last a few weeks!

Seeing how they work so hard, they can work on getting out of here. They are illegal.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Maybe we can swap'em, straight up. Johnny Potsmoker for Juan the gardener and an illegal to be named later.

They are increasing productivity. The drug addicts work like, well, they are all drugged up.

We'll keep the speed freaks.

I'm trying to figure you out. I live in one of the 6 largest cities in the US, which happens to be a sanctuary city for illegals. I really don't have a problem with them. In fact, as I have pointed out most of the wealthy folks, at least here, appreciate hard workers. You live in Alaska. Are you trying to tell me there is some sort of problem with illegals from south of the border in Alaska?

Seeing how they work so hard, they can work on getting out of here. They are illegal.

Dude, I don't even know what that means. I'm just pointing out that most Latinos are good people, willing to work hard, and I would absolutely choose a latina if I need a future nanny.

Racist... nope. Though I do have the right to choose not to associate with whomever I please.

Geez, you've admitted over and over that you would kill another human being. That is just plain sick. There is no need for me to even defend my post against someone with your ideals. I don't care if they've crossed over a border or broken into my house. No man or woman deserves to die.... EVER

Double True!!!!

Only if she leaves me. Then it's time for one that's deaf and dumb.
