I went to the DMV with both documents; the SSC with my married name and the EAD with my maiden name. My new state ID reflects what my EAD says: my maiden name.

The gentleman that helped me out was really helpful. He says the SSC is secondary. Anyone can walk around with a SSC and state they are that person.

He said that what really mattered was the EAD. I am to go by THAT name because that is what this country knows me as. He said I can request them to change it to my new name and once they do so, then I can get other documents in my married name (license etc).

He said it didn't matter there that my name was different on those two documents because when he ran it on the system, it matched.

Thank you for the report. Sounds like you got a good SSA officer. Hopefully you can change your GC at interview. Good luck!

I am a little confused about your last sentence though (I bolded it)... What matched? Your SSN is in your married name and your EAD in your maiden name so how do they match? Or did you get your SSN in your maiden name now until you get your GC in married?

I can't quote you cuz I'm using my phone. Sorry!

At the DMV, when I handed both documents, they came up as being me, I guess? My SSN is in my married name still, but I believe he still had to check the documents up on a system. So the social security number in my married name showed that that number was being used for the EAD with my maiden name. It basically matched, I believe? I had mail in both names so it wasnt a pain. And he was nice so I believe that definitely helped. I think if he was a lazy jerk, he would've made a big deal. Instead, he was helpful.

But I guess that somehow on his computer, he had to enter both documents and see if they were for the same person, legit, etc.

Make sense? Lol.

Im on my phone so it's a little harder to know what I'm typing!

That is very interesting. I don't know what state you're in and if it matters (I would guess not since they probably all use the same system to verify SSN?), but when I went to DMV to get a driver's license, they wouldn't issue me one, because my GC was in my married name and SSN was still in my maiden name (SSA hadn't updated it yet in their system), so they couldn't verify that the number really belonged to me. They told me to come back when SSA updates name change and they're both in the same name.

My Immigration Journey:

K1: June 2010 - December 2010

AOS: April 2011 - June 2011

ROC: April 2013 - August 2013

Naturalization: March 2014 - August 2014

Figured I'd update this in case someone has the same situation.

I asked my IO about this and she said it shouldn't have been any issues at the DMV since it's a change of name due to being married. Since the SSA accepted it, the DMV should too.

She stated that I could change my name with immigration by doing for I-90, but that would take some time and some money, so she said the other thing that would be possible is when you apply for naturalization... She says there's an option there for a name change!

I'm still unsure of whether to change my SSN's name... She said everything should be alright since it should match.

We'll see... no issues so far..
