Changing my wife's Maiden name to my last name

Haven't post here since my wife arrive on a CR1 2 months ago, update info:

Got her green card, and got her social security number. Both her maiden name was on it.

We try to change her last name to mine at the social security office when we went to request her ss card. The person said I had to call immigration to do this?

So now where do I start. I have read other people's post and they said to send my wife's passport back to her embassy to have it change.

You will have to change the name on her green card first, then you can change all other documents to the married name.

Full fee and form to change the name on the green card now, or wait till she has to renew the green card and then change it at that time.

She can change her name at the time of naturalization as part of the citizenship process. Otherwise you usually have to go to the local court and apply for a change of name. Then you can change her green card and other IDs.

You don't go to court to change to a married name that is for changing your first name or last name to something other than married name. You only need your marriage certificate to change to married name.

They have a 2 year GC and she just recently entered the USA waiting for citizenship would mean 3 years. They could simply change the GC name at ROC after 2 years if they did not want to pay extra to change the name now.

Inky is correct....change it now for replacement card fee or just wait until time for ROC, it really depends on if you NEED to change it now.

If you want to start using her married name in some areas of life then you can do that, even whilst having her green card in her maiden name. It might even be possible, once she has her SS card, to go to the SSA office with the marriage certificate and change her name on her SS card. She will probably be asked to show her green card though, and then it would depend on the individual as to whether they let her change her name on her SS card. It seems like you should be able to update your SS records before updating your green card, however like I said it probably depends who you talk to...
