Wow, Kathryn. As if you weren't going through enough already. (F) I'm wondering if something was going on because I was asked questions about who/where I was going that I am not normally asked. Like who, exactly, live there and how do I know them. They're my PARENTS you jackass. How do your parents know you? Honest to God. Glad you got someone nice coming back. You'd been through enough.

Even though one is a citizen of that country, the POE guards have every right to ask you questions. Not everyone is a law abiding citizen! And yes some get carried away! When i drove back to Sask, the guard asked me same type of questions and was soon on my way! People were taking forever gettign through the USA customs on my way back! They were doing a quick search of everyone! And i even got extra treatment--got to speak with the agriculture gal,lol They have an important job to do! They see people after people, people being rude with them, not a fun job,lol Good times!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Acknowledged and understood. However, I am not some Joe Blow from down the street who has a rap sheet or terroristic tendencies or ignorance of the law or unfamiliarity with travel or lack of awareness of customs and excise taxes. At what point does a "Trusted Traveller" become a trusted traveller? Is it with the police checks? How about the FBI checks? USCIS checks? Homeland Security checks? Canada Border Services? The answer is never. Why have these trusted traveller programs if they are NEVER going to trust us?

Well you never know what bulletins are out there and what they are looking for!! Criminals no longer look like criminals! They are very well trained and prepared!!

Krikit,

In view of what Flames wrote, it looks to me like they must have received a bulletin about a beautiful, intelligent Canadian woman living in the US coming home to visit her parents - otherwise, they wouldn't have targeted both of us like that! :D

Thank you everyone, for your condolences. They're appreciated.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Kathryn I'm so sorry about your father. (L)(F)

I've only had a few issues going to Canada. The first time because I was sleep deprived and probably didn't make much sense while being asked questions. I was told to park my vehicle and was escorted to a little room and had the Spanish inquisition routine for an hour and a half.

One other time I was sent from customs to talk to an immigration officer in Calgary because I told the lady I was there to get married to a Canadian Citizen. I'm sure she was thinking 'You're gonna leave? Ya right!' but they did let me in.

I hope I don't get hassled too much when I go to Calgary for Christmas.

I've had a harder time trying to get back to my own country. It seems every time I'm asked a bazillion questions. Like Krikit said, what's the point of having a NEXUS card and being a 'trusted traveler' if you are going to spend more time in customs then if you just left the stupid card in your wallet.

Bump!

How is everyone doing these days?

Chris and I are coming up on five years of marriage, eight of living together. He's been more or less in the US for about a decade, so yeah.

We have a house. Two new cars. I just started my nursing career about six months ago -- Chris actually got a job with an aerospace engineering company pretty much when we settled back in KS about five years ago, so. Still with the same company.

We're still trying for babby.

Actually, his sister is getting married to some rich dude in some random South American country over the winter. I'm not complaining because it's $1,000 for an all-inclusive resort thingy.

But I definitely need to be pregnant before then. It'll be my in-laws' first grand-kid if I can get knocked up before his sister. She gets the big wedding; I get the first grandbabby.

Hi Hannah, we've been pretty busy here ourselves. Our daughter will be 11 months shortly, and we are trying for another soon. You should come on in the baby chat going on, looks like a few of us are trying and a few new babies on the way.

Hey all....I, too, am guilty of not visiting VJ much after I received my 10 yr GC. Life has been busy. I've got a part time job working 4 hours a day. It works for me!

Larry has just returned to work after five months off due to a strep infection in his foot. It was a wild roller coaster ride but I had my church family for support.

Reading this post brought back great memories of chats and forums. I think the first year I was here we did a secret Santa exchange. I should have stayed in touch better. Now I've been here, I'm sure I'll be checking in daily to see what is happening with everyone.

April 13, 2009 - Welcome to the USA letter rec'd. PRC to be rec'd within 3 weeks.

Well maybe they'll hear that some have returned and they will too just for the "Canadian" connection. I didn't realize how much I missed it. So glad that you are all still here
