Along came this Visa Nazi, if you used the word "activated" your visa, she went nutz!! lol Maybe we can start a collection so she can go back on her meds, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I have been thinking the same thing for a little while. I know people get busy and have lives, but it seems like almost everyone who was a regular poster when I joined is now gone. :(

I think that is part of it Colleens,

A lot of the 'regulars' seem to have moved on - new jobs, new lives, new responsibilities . . . I miss the friendly camaraderie as well, although I find I am not signing on early in the morning anymore as I am on every night often until quite late so I need 'down' time from VJ.

Maybe come fall and winter we will settle back into a 'routine'. We could start up some of the other topics again - what are you reading, what's for dinner, how much do you miss Tim Horton's (VBG)?!

We could have a very typical Canadian discussion as well - talk about the weather  . My husband doesn't understand why I find the weather so interesting, but just today I read an article (from McLeans Magazine online) that says Canada has the most variable weather in the world - very cold winters, very hot summer, very dry to very humid, extreme fluctuations - sometimes in the same day :P - no wonder we are 'interested' :).

So, maybe we just have to start posting ourselves about things that interest us - start the 'chitchat' - and hopefully, others will join in.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Me too. I am guilty of enjoying everyone else's news and not sharing any of mine.

My update.

Last week my oldest son drove down for a very quick 4 day visit ; two of those days were travel days :(

First full day we hit two outlet malls where he bought most of his new wardrobe for his student teaching this year. Good-bye jeans and t-shirts.

The next day we went into NYC for dim-sum in Chinatown (yummy dim-sum), shopped up and down in Soho, checked out the new location of NY Ink (thank goodness no time for a tattoo, one is enough for Mom!), then lovely ride on the subway to watch the Yankees play.

Next day he left to go back to Canada. crying.gif

That sounds like an awesome visit OBX!! I have done something similar where I have just showed up at my parents place for a few days and surprised everyone, and as nice as it was to do that...it is still very hard to go back home!

Speaking as a newer member, I'd love to get to know the Canadian forum posters more... What sorts of threads used to be around? We could resurrect things and try to foster the community aspect you seem to be missing? I know I'd look forward to it!

Another (very!) newbie chiming in to say... I'd be into chit chat too. While I've been cruising around the forum, I've stumbled across some chatty/community threads here and I was thinking that I can't wait to be around long enough to feel like a part of the group here too. Sad to hear that apparently those chatty/community threads seem to be a thing of the past.

Here's hoping for a Canadian community resurrection!

The K-1 Visa journey for myself and my two K-2 children:

AOS: NOA1 2012-11-20; Biometrics 2012-12-14; AP/EAD approved 2013-1-11; Interview 2013-1-31; 2-yr Green cards in hand 2013-2-9 (101 days total)

ROC: NOA1 11-7-14; Biometrics 12-1-14; 10-yr Green cards ordered 4-13-15! (157 days total)

Count me in!

I've been looking for Canucks and French speaking groups around here (NM) but I haven't had much luck. I never understood ghettos but now that I am living abroad, I feel this need to try and fit in some Canadian community. Skype with my family and friends in Canada can only do so much.

I just moved this June ans I am still in my newlywed bliss. Being a lazy bum scratching my butt watching tv and cooking for my husband. I found a rewarding volunteer position for a local non-profit to keep myself busy and involved. But there's just not that much butt to scratch... and watching Real housewives reruns is only distracting for so long. I've always been very focused on my career so I'm kinda still getting around this new rhythm (and life). On the other hand, I've been waiting for my visa for so long that I don't feel like waiting for anything anymore. So I'm hanging out until I get my EAD. Or I get pregnant. Whichever comes first

Oh and I'd love to hear about Visa Nazi chick too

Flames.

Glad to hear you got a visit, OBX. When I moved closer to home I was hoping I would too. But, apparently, my children are social butterfly workaholics. I guess they grew up to be like me afterall. :hehe:

So nice to see I'm not alone. :) I would love if the Canada forum became chatty again. I used to laugh so hard, sometimes. That's something I really really miss from back home. My friends and family and I would have so many hearty belly-aching laughs. Down here it's just kind of a chuckle or two. Sometimes. Everyone is so serious here. Or maybe I just don't fit in.

Yes, I'd love to see some chit chat threads as well. The VJers here are exceptionally friendly  Well, perhaps one of us should dive in and make a new thread? Hehe.

I wondered about it too - although I have to admit lately now that naturalization is done, I don't feel a big draw anymore. I am soooooooooooooooooo done with immigration itself - at least until my daughter goes through the last bit next year.

I lived and breathed VJ for a couple years until life got busy down here :) Sometimes I feel out of touch with the way K1s go now...wish I had been allowed to book my own appointment!

I still lvoe to chat on here though but we're certainly missing some of our more colourful characters
