I decided that i wanted a learner`s permit first even though i drove in Romania, still i want to practice before i drive here.

So we went to DDS today. I have the EAD card and my AOS is still pendng at CSC. The lady there asked for my ID and i presented the EAD then asked for my romanian DL then my state ID wich expired when my I94 expired. Everything went well, she asked if i wanted my state ID renewed ,i said yes.

Well after she took my picture etc. she said "it doesn`t get trough" , she couldn`t give me any explanation why. She said maybe because i changed status? My AOS is still pending though. All she could tell me was " it doesn`t get trough".

Then she gave me a paper telling me they will call me.On the paper it sais that DDS checks with USCIS about immigration status information.

I have heared of people here getting DL`s with just EAD and was wondering if this is the norm? Or does anybody have any ideea about why "it wouldn` get trough"?

Did anything change with your SSN?

I got my SSN 4 years ago when i was here on a different visa.

Well i just have to wait for the DL then i guess .:(

Depends on the state, but most people can't get anything done until they have GC.

i know it`s different from state to state but i`m in GA and someone from GA got their DL with EAD alone....

On your state ID it probably says "check status with CIS"(category 9), meaning legal status. You haven't got that since AOS is still pending. EAD is acceptable in some states, and sometimes the hardcopy of NOA2.

Otherwise call a different license branch and ask them about their policies to be sure of the rules in your state.

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

Click timeline or "about me" for all details.

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

AOS Approval took 206 days from NOA1 date to email update. (231 days from filing until greencard in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until greencard in hand: 655 days

You should be fine with only the EAD, but I would update the SSN to be sure because they compare with USCIS and everything else and your SSN is not link with your current status. It is always advice that you update your status with SSN as soon as possible. I didn't have an issue with EAD in GA. And I would apply for driver's license right away if you have your Romanian DL, you will have to surrender it. Even if you don't feel comfortable right away with driving in here at least you get a great ID to move around.
