You got to be kidding me. I live in an upscale part of town with roads filled with potholes. Most highways in Texas still have only 2 lanes with stop lights hanging from a wire when you cross a small town. Roughly half the CR (county roads) are paved with gravel. Most roads in Texas do not have pavements. And these are just the roads in Texas, lets not even talk about the other infrastructure like stormwater runoff, education, urban development, traffic girdlock, public transportation, etc.

It is Houston you're talking about.

Houston does suck pretty bad overall anyway.

Not exactly. Texas does have specific sections of the military that are controlled by the Governor of the state.

Income? Uh, taxes wouldn't exactly have to be raised at all. Instead of the Federal taxes going to the pig of the United States, they'd go to Austin instead.

"crumbling infrastruture?"

Texas has the best roads in the United States already in case you hadn't noticed. But thanks for playing anyway!

They may be under the command of the governor, but their allegiance is to the U.S. You are aware that infrastructure includes more than just roads right? If Tejas seceded, they would have to create their own currency, and be forced to deal with..... import/export tariffs. Not to mention all consumer goods prices would dramatically increase. Yeah, good for Tejas, they should secede. I'll laugh my ####### off when they are overrun by the drug cartels militias or the Mexican army :P

Figuring we account for the vast majority of the defense industry in the US. Figuring we account for the overwhelming amount of refined oil in the US, and much more, the US would be the one paying the import/export tariffs to Texas. :)

You're also VERY naive if you think personnel in the Texas National Guard and Air National Guard have their allegience set to the United States first and foremost. You don't know good ole Texas boys very well at all.

R I G H T

Come up to DFW, we'll show you how roads should be taken care of and how to improve the infrastructure in a growing city. :)

Perhaps heading to Austin might do you some good as well as you look at their improvements.

Or more likely, the U.S. would simply nationalize all Texas' assets, just to show you how impotent Texas really is. Do all Texans have this Napoleon complex?

Regarding state guard, are you suggesting a treasonous element within the state? Even if they did swear allegiance to the Welfare State of Tejas, the assets all belong to the U.S., If they were allowed to secede, do you really think they would want to get into a war with the U.S.? You can keep your weekend warriors, we'll take the long range bombers and tanks back.

Can you support those claims with stats?

As far as military personnel, all the times I went to service schools, usually around 20 percent were from California. Texas, Louisiana, or New York were distant seconds.

I have been to both Austin & DFW, it is still pitiful compared to the rest of US. If you really think that DFW & Austin have good roads, then you really need to take a road trip to other states. Houston has a lot of road improvement projects going on too, however it is too little & too late to keep up with the population boom. As Rob mentioned, roads are just a small part of infrastructure. Texas still has a long way to go to bring its infrastructure up to par in other areas.

He's probably counting all of Haliburton as a Texas company, despite them moving most of their operations to their Dubai HQ.

Don't get off the highways in California. Most of our secondary roads suck, well, except for Marin County. They do a pretty good job there.

California has a pretty good public transport system too, which Texas lacks in a major way.

DFW actually has very nice public transportation if you'd pay attention. Not for the "suburbs" but for Dallas and Fort Worth, there are buses, light rail in Dallas, and the TRE Train that goes between Fort Worth and Dallas.

Not to mention all the lame ####### bike lanes they've been putting here in Fort Worth, re-urbanization projects, etc.

You really should get up here more often. You must have been in Oakcliff when you saw ####### roads.

Depends on the area. Here, the county bus only comes around once every two hours. Rural service sucks, but the metropolitan areas do pretty well, as do the interlinks.

That is pretty much what I meant. The US is too vast to have good public transport in rural areas. However, you can only dream of having something like BART or LA Metro in DFW, Houston or Austin.

BART is pretty good, but LA Metro is awful. We have a few overcrowded buses and a lot of rhetoric about rail. I will probably be retired before we have any meaningful public transport in the los angeles area.

Back in the RTD days, they used to have summer passes for the kids. I took a lot of rides from Woodland Hills to Will Rogers and back, when we couldn't convince a parent to take us to Zuma, or Dune.
